Level Instrument Aqaba Screening Project Volume 2 - Specs
Level Instruments
Non-contact level instruments (guided microwave, radar) shall be the preferred
way of measuring solids level in bins. Remote flange mounted elements with
accessible separate transmitters at ground or walkway level are preferred.
Alternately approved integral transmitters shall be mounted adjacent to access
walkways as a second option.
Level Switches
2.4.2.1 Tilt type level sensors may be used to detect plug chute conditions, high pile level
and “material-on-belt” conditions. Direct wired tilt switches are preferred with timers
in the process control system. If an integral part of the field tilt switch is a field
control unit it shall have a 0-10 second adjustable time delay to prevent false
operation.
2.4.2.2 For conveyor blocked chutes where tilt switches are not viable, microwave through
beam units are preferred. There shall be a transmitter and receiver on opposite sides
of the chute with nonmetallic (e.g. HDPE or ceramic) inserts in the chute wall through
which the microwave unit is directed. Warning signs shall be supplied with microwave
level switch applications.
2.4.2.4 Vibratory wand type level switches shall be used for high-level detection in bins
containing non-corrosive liquids, dust or granular material. For bin or tank
applications flanged connections are preferred.
Load cells shall be used for custody transfer or batch weighing of products and
material.
Strain gauge weighing systems with sensors bolted on the structural support
shall only be considered for coarse weight applications on isolated structures not
subject to vibration.
The scale electronics shall be microprocessor based and belt-speed
compensated. The transmitted weight signal shall be an isolated 4-20 mA signal
with pulse signals for totalization within the process control system. Pulse rate
and width shall be selectable. Vendor shall also provide serial communication
from the microprocessor utilizing HART protocol if available (alternatively RS-
485 Modbus RTU protocol) to the process control system.
Scales shall be designed to provide ±0.5% accuracy for in-plant systems. For
systems involving product sale, the scales shall be designed to provide 0.25%
accuracy.
