Module 2 Lesson 2 Task Compilation 1 TC 1

1. The document discusses J.K. Rowling's personal consumption audit where she analyzes her daily consumption of items like watching TV shows, playing video games, drinking coffee, eating meals, and sleeping. She identifies ways to reduce consumption of some items in order to focus on more meaningful activities and maintain a healthy lifestyle. 2. It also summarizes a reading about the concept of "de-development" which argues rich countries should slow their rapid growth to avoid overconsuming limited global resources. De-development entails controllable measures to assess consumption without jeopardizing happiness. 3. Additionally, it analyzes a documentary on C.S. Module 2 Lesson 2 Task Compilation 1 (TC 1)

Exercise 1: Reading Comprehension Task (p.87)

1. De-development may appear negative at first glance, but once you understand what Hickel
means by this concept, you will see that it isn't as bad as it appears. Rich-country de-
development entails slowing their growth while remaining progressive, so that they do not

m
overconsume the limited resources available in this world because they are growing at such a

er as
co
rapid pace.

2. Standard planning frameworks are concerned with improving people's lives at the most basic
ou urc
levels of society and motivating them to "bridge the gap" by supporting and launching new
projects. The 'de-developing' growth framework, on the other hand, is about providing
o

substitutes in terms of consumption and the quality of people's lives in order to 'capture' the
aC s

wealthy countries.
vi y re

3. Rich countries, according to Hickel, can de-develop by reassessing their consumption and
ed d

subjecting it to much more controllable measures without jeopardizing their happiness in the
ar stu

process. Rich countries prioritize quantity over quality, and because overconsumption occurs,
so does overproduction, which accumulates vast amounts of resources.

4. Hickel smirked at these experts because they used phrases like "de-growth," "zero growth,"
and "de-development," which provide a pessimistic view of a region's success. These words,
according to him, are effective in neutralizing someone who is not yet on board with the path
sh

of change.

5. I believe Hickel explained de-development in his article in a very clear manner. He

emphasized that de-development still prioritizes growth, but in a much more sustainable

slow but steady manner.

Assignment 6: Documentary Analysis (p. 93)

1. The idea that the development of science can be corrupted by the influence of people who
want to use it for something evil and unethical influenced Lewis to be a skeptic and critic of
scientism. He was not opposed to science; rather, he saw it as something that the world
desperately needed because technological advancements could lead to a better future. However,
it is being used for corrupt purposes once more.

m
2. 2.1 Science as religion, science can be awe-inspiring. Lewis saw it as the magician's twin

er as
co
because it persuades people that humanity can finally accomplish what was previously thought to

eH w
be impossible. Many people celebrate science religiously because it alters their perceptions of

o.
morality, life, and ethics.
rs e
ou urc
2.2 Science as credulity, skepticism is indirectly promoted by science. Because it is done
empirically, people regard it as far from gullibility. As a result, they have a high level of trust in
o

scientific authorities. People's perceptions of Freudianism and evolutionism are two examples.
aC s
vi y re

2.3 Science as power, modern scientific advances have enabled us to accomplish what was
previously thought to be impossible. It was even devoted to gaining power in this world. Science
ed d

is a very powerful tool for achieving your goals, and people use it to dangerous levels.
ar stu

3. In comparison to magic, science is real, as are its effects on the entire world. According to
Lewis, modern science can reach heights that defy ethical constraints. It has the potential to
is

manipulate a large number of people depending on how it is used.

Th

4. He was concerned that scientocracy would cause scientists to become overly enamored with
their authority by glorifying themselves, and that they would later aspire for political power in
sh

order to climb the hierarchy using science. The concept of scientocracy allows science to control
all aspects of society such as politics, media, and so on, whereas scientism believes that
everything can be solved or achieved through science.

5. The documentary stated unequivocally that science is good, but not in all aspects, particularly
when it is abused. Because scientism asserts that science can solve everything while also
acknowledging that science can be destructive, it may pose a threat to humans in the future
because scientism can be used for personal gain and corrupt actions.
