VOTING

EVALUATION
Answer the following questions. Use separate papers for your solutions and answers.
1. Identify atleast 5 preferences of the same kind (e.g.places, tourist destinations, foods,
etc.), then ask at 10 persons (relatives or neighbors) to rank then. Classify them according
to ranking, then determine the first rank using:

a. Plurality
Ranking
Boracay 1 2 5 1 1 5 4 2 5 1
Palawan 3 4 1 5 3 2 3 4 1 2
Baguio 2 1 4 4 2 3 1 5 4 3
Batanes 4 3 3 2 4 1 5 3 2 4
Cebu
5 5 2 3 5 4 2 1 3 5

 The rank 1st votes is shown below:

Ranking
Boracay 1 1 1 1
Palawan 1 1
Baguio 1 1
Batanes 1
Cebu
1
Votes
Boracay 4
Palawan 2
Baguio 2
Batanes 1
Cebu 1

 Boracay won the 1st rank.

b. Borda Count
Ranking
Boracay 1 2 5 1 1 5 4 2 5 1
Palawan 3 4 1 5 3 2 3 4 1 2
Baguio 2 1 4 4 2 3 1 5 4 3
Batanes 4 3 3 2 4 1 5 3 2 4
Cebu
5 5 2 3 5 4 2 1 3 5

Solution. Since there are 5 choices, rank 1 will be given 5 points, rank 2 will be equal to 4 points,
3 points for rank 3, 2 points for rank 4, and 1point for rank 5.

Boracay: 4–Rank 1–(4 x 5)= 20

2 – Rank 2 – (2 x 4)= 8
0 – Rank 3 – (0 x 3)= 0
1 – Rank 4 – (1 x 2)= 2
3 – Rank 5 – (3 x 1)= 3
Total 33 points

Palawan: 2 – Rank 1 –(2 x 5)= 10

2 – Rank 2 – (2 x 4)= 8
3 – Rank 3 – (3 x 3)= 9
2 – Rank 4 – (2 x 2)= 4
1 – Rank 5 –(1 x 1)= 1
Total 32 points
Baguio: 2– Rank 1 –(2 x 5)=10
2 – Rank 2 –(2 x 4)= 8
2 – Rank 3 – (2 x 3)= 6
3 – Rank 4 – (3 x 2)= 6
1 – Rank 5 – (1 x 1)= 1
Total 31 points

Batanes: 1– Rank 1–(1 x 5)=5

2– Rank 2–(2 x 4)= 8
3– Rank 3 –(3 x 3)= 9
3– Rank 4 –(3 x 2)= 6
1– Rank 5 –(1 x 1)= 1
Total 29 points

Cebu: 1–Rank 1 –(1 x 5)= 5

2– Rank 2 –(2 x 4)= 8
2– Rank 3 –(2 x 3)= 6
1– Rank 4 –(1 x 2)= 2
4– Rank 5 –(4 x 1)= 4
Total 25 points

 Using Borda count method of voting, Boracay rank 1st (the same rank in plurality
method of voting).

c. Plurality with Elimination

Ranking
Boracay 1 2 5 1 1 5 4 2 5 1
Palawan 3 4 1 5 3 2 3 4 1 2
Baguio 2 1 4 4 2 3 1 5 4 3
Batanes 4 3 3 2 4 1 5 3 2 4
Cebu
5 5 2 3 5 4 2 1 3 5

 Eliminate first the one with fewest rank 1 votes. If two or more have the same these
alternatives have the same number of rank 1 votes, then all
are eliminated unless that would eliminate all the alternatives. In that case different method
of voting must be used.
 From the given, "Batanes" and "Cebu" will be eliminated because it has the least rank
1 votes.

After elimination
Ranking
Boracay 1 2 5 1 1 5 4 2 5 1
Palawan 3 4 1 5 3 2 3 4 1 2
Baguio 2 1 4 4 2 3 1 5 4 3

New preference schedule

Ranking
Boracay 1 2 3 1 1 3 3 1 3 1
Palawan 3 3 1 3 3 2 2 2 1 2
Baguio 2 1 2 2 2 1 1 3 2 3

 Eliminate again the alternative with fewest rank 1 votes, then adjust/retake the votes.
Palawan will be eliminated, then Baguio will be adjusted into rank 2.
Ranking
Boracay 1 2 2 1 1 2 2 1 2 1
Baguio 2 1 1 2 2 1 1 2 1 2

 1st ranks: Boracay= 5; Baguio= 5

 Boracay and Baguio has the same rank 1 votes, so no alternative will be eliminated.

Ranking
Boracay 1 2 2 1 1 2 2 1 2 1
Baguio 2 1 1 2 2 1 1 2 1 2
 1st rank votes: Boracay= 5 ; Baguio= 5. Since Boracay and Baguio has the same rank 1 votes,
therefore, both of the places got the 1st rank using the plurality with elimination method of voting.

d. Head-to-head voting methods.

Ranking
Boracay 1 2 5 1 1 5 4 2 5 1
Palawan 3 4 1 5 3 2 3 4 1 2
Baguio 2 1 4 4 2 3 1 5 4 3
Batanes 4 3 3 2 4 1 5 3 2 4
Cebu
5 5 2 3 5 4 2 1 3 5

Solution.Create a table for head–to– head comparisons. Shaded cells are duplicates and cells
between the same candidates.
