Select a wire rope for a gantry crane to lift a maximum load of 100 kN at a depth of 20
meters. The rope is to be lifted with an acceleration of 1 m/s2. (SI UNITS)
Design a wire rope for this application using Faires method. Convert the given units to
English system if necessary.
SOLUTION:
Note: Since there are unknown given (type of rope, wire diameter, etc), the first part of
the solution is based on Khurmi as part of my assumption. These lacking given and their
values are assumed based on Khurmi’s method then it will be used in the design of wire
ropes using Faires method.
Given:
1. From table 20.9, we find that the wire ropes for general engineering purposes such
as cranes, excavators, etc. are of two types; 6 x 19 and 6 x 37. Let us use the
rope type 6 x 19 to check if it is the safe type to use.
2. From table 20.11, we find that the factor of safety of gantry crane is 6. Since the
design load is calculated by taking a factor of safety 2 to 2.5 times the factor of
safety given in table 20.11. Therefore, let us take the factor of safety as 13.
3. Finding the diameter of the rope with tensile strength of 1750 – 1900 MPa, type
6 x 19.
4. From table 20.10, For a 6 x 19 rope.
5. Sheave Diameter based on table 20.12 considering the preferred sheave
diameter.
Given:
Specifications
6 strand x 19 wires standard rope. This rope consists of 6 external strands each
with 19 wires. It have a fibre core also consisting of a 19-wire strand.
Uses
Suitable for multiple uses from the construction of rock fall barriers to the
production of anti-fall lifelines, cranes, etc.
