Reflective Writing For Optimization Project 1

The document discusses a reflective writing assignment for an optimization project involving linear programming. The author learned about maximizing exposure from TV and radio advertisements by creating equations to find the feasible region of maximization given restrictions. As an example, the author proposes applying this analysis to optimizing hand sanitizer production based on profit and minimizing costs and materials. The author explains how understanding this project would help when explaining optimization strategies to advertising agency clients.

Reflective Writing for Optimization Project

For this project I learned about linear programming through an experiment based

on optimization. I started by learning background information about an advertising

campaign where I would learn how to maximize the amount of people exposed to TV

and radio advertisements. I was given some restrictions and then created equations that

I graphed to find the feasible region of maximization. To accomplish this, I used linear

equations, addition/subtraction, multiplication/division, and graphing.

I’ve thought of an example of another application where this type of analysis

would be beneficial that deals with hand sanitizer production. The application would be

based on how much hand sanitizer should be produced depending on the profit made

from purchasers where loss of material and cost are minimized. Restrictions/outlines

similar to this math project could be drawn in the beginning including budget and

expected purchasers of the hand sanitizer.

If I worked for an advertising agency it would be important to be able to explain

the details of this project to clients so that they would understand that spending time on

the project is beneficial and prudent to being able to make them the most amount of

money.

If one variable changes then the entire equation would change. Such as, if the

budget decreased then there would be less ads available for purchase. If the cost of an

ad changes then the amount of ads purchased would also go up or down.

If the vertices weren’t at integer values, I would interpret the result by rounding. If

I found 15.2 radio ads and 46.8 TV ads I would round down to 15 radio ads and 46 TV

ads because I can’t go over the budget restrictions.

This assignment did change my opinion on the usefulness of math. I use math

everyday at my job but mostly addition/subtraction and multiplication/division. I knew

there was a lot of math used in other professions but I never thought about math in

advertising. I can see now how advertising would actually be one of the professions that

uses the most math because advertising is really just all about money. Another

profession that I recently realized uses a lot of math is working in the kitchen as a

chef/cook. Chefs are constantly dividing and multiplying fractions to make their recipes

for more or less people. I can see how understanding fractions would be important so

that the meals still taste great!
