The document discusses solar energy and its potential as a major energy source. It notes that solar energy is cheaper than fossil fuels since the sun provides an abundant source. However, solar energy can currently only be used effectively in sunny areas and most homes are not located in the sunniest parts of the world. Additionally, solar cells needed to harness solar power are still very expensive, limiting widespread adoption. The document also raises that solar energy is a non-polluting alternative to fossil fuels.

BAHASA INGGRIS

TEXT 1

We often hear about solar cars, solar heating, and solar batteries. But will solar energy ever be a
major source of energy for society?
Solar energy is cheaper than other fossil fuels because we can get an abundant source from the
sun. In sunny desert areas, 50 % of the sun’s radiation that reaches the ground could be used to
produce electricity for business and industries and to provide heat, light and hot water from homes.
Experimental solar ponds can also produce hot water to drive generators.
Unfortunately, we can’t yet power our homes entirely on the sunlight. Solar energy can only be
used effectively in bright light. Its greatest potential, therefore, is in hot countries that have clear
skies for most of the year. But, unfortunately most houses are not in the sunniest part of the world.
Moreover, in order to harness solar power, solar cells are needed to convert sunlight directly into
electricity. Solar cells are very cheap to run, but relatively expensive to buy and many people can’t
afford them.
Needless to say, solar energy is useful and non-pollution source of energy. Unfortunately, solar
cells, the main device to harness the sun’s energy are very expensive.

TEXT 3

All planes need air pressure under their wings to stay up in the air. As they move forward, the
higher air pressure underneath their wings pushes them upward and gives them lift.
The smooth, streamlined shape of the plane allows the air to flow easily over its surface. This
helps to reduce the drag caused by the air pushing against the plane and allows it to move rapidly
through the air.
Planes move forward using the engines. This movement is called thrust. Moving forward keeps a
stream of moving air passing over the wings. If the engines fail, the plane will begin to descend very
quickly.
The air above the wings moves faster, so it is at a lower pressure than the air under the wings.
The air under the wings moves more slowly and slightly squashed, so it is at high pressure than
the air above the wings.

13. What does the text describe?

A. How the wings of the plane work
B. How the plane moves forward
C. How the plane is made
D. The engine of the plane
E. How a plane flies

14. The planes stay up in the air when ____ .

A. a stream of moving air passes over their wings
B. there is air pressure under their wings
C. the wings move forward
D. the engines move faster
E. the engines fail

15. This helps to reduce the drag caused by the air pushing against the plane and allows it to move
rapidly through the air (paragraph2).
The underlined word can be replaced by ____ .
A. slowly
B. quickly
C. smoothly
D. gradually
E. immediately

16. What is the sue of air pressure under the wings?
