1st Periodical Test in Science 10

1) This document is a science exam for 10th grade students that tests their knowledge of concepts related to plate tectonics, continental drift, seafloor spreading, and geological evidence supporting these theories. It contains 3 sections - identification questions, true/false statements, and essay questions. 2) The identification questions cover terms like plate boundaries, heat transfer methods, continental drift theorists, and extinct animal species. The true/false section tests understanding of plate tectonic processes and landform development. 3) The essay questions ask students to explain the relationships between continental drift, seafloor spreading, and plate tectonic theories, and differentiate between seafloor spreading and continental drift theories.

1st PERIODICAL EXAMINATION TEST IN SCIENCE 10

Name:____________________________________Grade and Section:_____________________ Date:_____________
Direction: Read the following questions. Write your answer on the space provided for each number.
I. IDENTIFICATION:
____1. They may slip past each other & create a tear fault, accompanied by earthquakes but little volcanic
activity.
____2. They occur when 2 plates slip past each other.
____3. The transfer of energy through empty space.
____4. Heat transfer by direct contact of particles of matter.
____5. Heats transfer by the movement a heated fluid.
____6. He is remembered as the originator of the Continental Drift Theory by hypothesizing in 1912 that the
continents are slowly drifting around the Earth and was once a large landmass called ________.
____7. He proposed the Continental Drift Theory.
____8. It is evidence which is the matching of large-scale geological features on different continents.
____9. The existence of ___________ in Antarctica suggested that it was once located near the region of earth
where climate is enough to support complex life forms such as plants and tall trees.
____10. Another important piece of evidence in the Continental Drift theory is the ______________
____11. It is known to have been a type of reptile, similar to the modern crocodile, which propelled itself through
water with its long hind legs and limber tail.
____12. It was a mammal- like reptile.
____13. The ________________, which translates to “shovel reptile,” is thought to have been an herbivore with a
stout built like a pig.
____14. It is known to be large and bulky and possibly could not have drifted or flown across the oceans to a
separate continent.
____15. He discovered the Sea-Floor Spreading.
II. TRUE OR FALSE. Write TRUE if the statement is correct and FALSE if the statement is incorrect.
____1. They may collide when two oceanic plate edges sink, plates edges are bent into a deep trench called the
subduction zone.
____2. Lithosphere materials from oceanic crust are not subducted in the trench while continental border is
fractured, folded & uplifted.
____3. Magma rises from the subduction zone through fractures.
____4. Little volcanic activity occurs because rocks from the lithosphere do not sink deep into the asthenosphere.
____5. Ocean crust is pushed beneath the continental crust into the mantle and melts
____6. Destructive processes do not break down landforms through weathering, erosion, and mass wasting.
____7. Weathering is the disintegration of rocks by mechanical, chemical, and biological agents.
____8. Erosion is the removal and transportation of weathered material by water, wind, ice, or gravity.
____9. When an oceanic crust converges with a continental crust, a crack in between the crusts underwater,
called trench, is formed.
____10. At the mantle, the leading edge of the subducting plate cracks or becomes fluid. It turns into a hot molten
material which we call magma.
____11. When plates move together, hot molten materials wells up from Earth's interior to form a new ocean floor
with mid-oceanic ridges.
____12. Heat is always transferred from a warmer substance to a cooler substance.
____13. When a spoon sits in a hot pot of soup, particles near the bottom of the spoon vibrate faster as they are
heated, so they bump into other particles and heat them.
____14. Tectonic processes do not include movements at plate boundaries, earthquakes, orogeny, deformation,
and volcanic activity.
____15. Constructive processes are responsible for physically building or constructing certain landforms.
____16. As plates pull toward from each other, a vertical space which may extend deep down into the lowest layer
of the crust is created.
____17. Tectonic Landforms are created by massive earth movements due to tectonic and volcanic activity, and
include landforms such as: mountains, rift valleys, volcanoes, and intrusive igneous landforms.
____18. Tear faults form, accompanied by earthquakes because of great amount of stress built up in these areas,
but there is little volcanic activity & little crustal material is not destroyed.
____19. The San Andreas Fault in Canada & Arabian plates sliding past African plate along a transform fault
where several gulfs and inland seas have been formed like the Jordan Sea
____20. Glaciers carve rocks and leave marks as they move. In this evidence, scientists can determine the
direction of movement of each continent.
III. ESSAY (5 POINTS EACH)
1. How are the theories of continental drift, seafloor spreading, and plate tectonics related?

2. What is the difference between sea floor spreading and continental drift theory?

3. How does the seafloor spreading help scientists to explain continental drift theory?
