Strength of Material Chapter-6 Theory of Flexure Assignment-I
1. Determine the maximum slope and deflection of a simply supported beam loaded with
UDL throughout the span.
2. Determine the maximum slope and deflection of a cantilever beam loaded with UDL
throughout the span.
3. Describe about elastic and plastic bending.
4. Illustrate the distribution of shearing stress over a symmetrical I-section.
5. A beam consists of a symmetrical rolled steel joist. The beam is simply supported at its
ends and carries a point load at the center of the span. If the maximum stress due to
bending is 140 MPa, find the ratio of the depth of the beam section to span in order that
the central deflection may not exceed 1/480 of the span. Take, E= 200 GPa.
6. A floor has to carry a load of 12 kN per square meter. The floor is supported on
rectangular joists each 300 mm* 100 mm and 5 m long. Calculate the distance apart
(from the center to center) at which joists should be placed so that the maximum stress in
𝑀𝑁
the joists should not exceed 8 .

7. A hollow circular bar having outside diameter twice the inside diameter is used as a
beam. From the bending moment diagram of the beam, it is found that the bar is
subjected to a bending moment of 40 kNm. If the allowable bending stress in the beam is
to be limited to 100 MN/m2, find the inside diameter of the bar.
8. A beam simply supported at ends and having cross-section as shown in fig. is loaded
with UDL, over whole of its span. If the beam is 8 m long, find the UDL, if maximum
permissible bending stress in tension is limited to 30 MN/m2 and in compression to 45
MN/m2. What are the actual maximum bending stresses set up in the section?

9. A girder of uniform section and constant depth is freely supported over a span of 3 m. If
the point load at the mid span is 30 kN and I= 15.614*10-6 m4, calculate:
i. The central deflection.
ii. The slopes at the ends of the beam.
Take E= 200 GN/m2.
10. A 250 mm long cantilever of rectangular section 40 mm wide and 30 mm deep carries a
uniformly distributed load. Calculate the value of w is the maximum deflection in the
cantilever is not exceed 0.5 mm. Take, E= 70 GN/m2.
11. A cantilever 1.5 m long carries a uniformly distributed load over the entire length. Find the
deflection at the free end if the slope at the free end is 1.50.
