DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
NISHA
INTRODUCTION
Domestic violence is a sensitive topic and still most of the people take this
issue very lightly. Domestic violence has devastating consequences. There
are consequences both for the individual victim and wider society.
Domestic violence also named as domestic abuse is violence or other
abuse in a domestic setting, such as in marriage. It takes multiple forms,
including physical, verbal, emotional, economic, religious, reproductive, and
sexual abuse, which can range from subtle, coercive forms to marital rape
and to violent physical abuse such as choking, beating, female genital
mutilations and acid throwing that result in disfigurement or death.
Domestic murders include stoning, bride burning, honor killing and dowry
death.
METHODS
It is based on secondary research. Data was analyzed used secondary
approach. The study highlighted the difficult plight of women who were
severely beaten by their husbands. The study showed how cultural norms,
shame, and the lack of viable alternatives kept women in abusive
relationships. Many of the women suffered physical abuse in pregnancy as
well as sexual abuse and degrading treatment from their partners. Virtually
no public institutions, including the police and health sector, were trained or
sensitive to the needs of battered women.
RESULTS
Most of the adult and adolescent females in their houses were exposed to
domestic violence in their past year. Maximum number of domestic
violence cases were seen amongst the age group of 30–39-year-old.
Prevalence was highest among the female who were illiterates. It was also
observed that drunken men come to their home and beat their wives and
abuse them verbally depicting the reasons of violence reported by
secondary research were followed by not having a male child and
unemployment. Other reason was insufficient dowry, relationship with
another women, poor family income and not approving relationship with
wives’ parent. Few females reported that they were the part of domestic
violence was refusing for sex. Being economically productive and better
family income would help them to overcome the situations.
DISCUSSION
The recent studies shows that most of the ladies in India even in 21 st
centuries have experienced domestic violence. Most of the female in this
study reported that opportunity of education, being economically productive
and better family income would help them to overcome the situation.
CONCLUSION
The reason of violence are various factors such as power, employment,
and education level. Domestic violence is associated with female illiteracy
rate. Females tend to accept that violence is something normal. This might
be related to fact that might be related to fact that manhood is associated
with violence and that behavior is widely accepted as a form of behavior. It
is told to the girls before marriage that she should learn to adjust with her
family. The husbands justify this act that they have all the right to beat their
wife. The mindset of husbands as a sole authority of household needs to
be changed and this is to be more emphasized by the parents. Parents
should change their thinking only after that can teach their children correct
way of living the life.
