Asking questions in the past

Hello everybody! Let’s continue talking about the past. We’re going to see how to make
questions with Past Simple and Past Progressive.

Past simple:

First let’s remember when to use past simple: We use PAST SIMPLE for activities or
situations that were completed at a definite time. Look at the examples:
 She forgave me yesterday morning.
 He wore shorts last weekend.
 They fell in love a month ago.

Yes/ No questions
Now let’s talk about questions with past simple. Past Simple - Yes/No Questions.
Asking Yes / No questions in the past simple is very easy. Just put 'did' before the subject,
and the verb in its infinitive form. Here are the simple past - 'yes / no' questions.
Look at these examples:
 Did you make the video? There are two possible answers:
o Yes, I did. - for short answer or Yes, I made the video. - for long answer.

 Did he wake up the actress?

o No, he didn’t. - for short answer or No, he didn’t wake up the actress. - for
long answer.

 Did you meet the main actor?

o No, I didn’t. - for short answer or No, I didn’t meet the main actor. - for long
answer.

 Did she teach English to the characters?

o Yes, she did or Yes, she taught English to the characters.

 Did they take a taxi?
o No, they didn’t or No, they didn’t take a taxi.
'Wh' question
Now let’s see the structure for Information Questions or 'Wh' questions.
To make a 'Wh' question in simple past, just put the Wh -question word at the beginning of
the sentence plus the auxiliary did plus the subject plus the verb in the infinitive form plus
the complement. Look at these examples:
 Where did you send the speech? I sent the speech to the office.
 What did he make? He made a biographical video.
 Why did she speak English? Because she grew up in the USA.
 How did they get there? They got there by taxi.
 When did you break up? We broke up last June.

Past progressive:

Remember: We use past progressive for activities or situations that were not completed.
Look at these examples:
 I was teaching drama when a ball hit my head.
 He was sitting down while the theatrical cast was standing up.
 You were wearing a suit all day yesterday.

Yes/ No questions
We can make yes/no questions by putting the past tense of the verb to be (Was or Were) at
the beginning of the sentences plus the subject plus the verb with -ing plus the complement.
For example:
 Were you spending time at the cafeteria last night?
o Yes, I was. Or No, I wasn’t.
 Was he saying goodbye?
o Yes, he was. Or No, he wasn’t.
 Were they getting up late during the week?
o Yes, they were or No, they weren’t.

'Wh' question
To make a 'Wh' question put the WH-question word at the beginning plus verb to be plus the
subject plus the verb with –ing. For example:
 How was she traveling to Paris?
o She was traveling by train.
 Where was he going last night?
o He was going to the movie theater.
 What were they thinking about?
o They were thinking about getting married.
 Why were they crying two days ago?
o They were crying because their parents had an accident.
