A BRIEF OVERVIEW

Managing Director

The Establishment of KS&EW is a comprehension of the dream of the founding


father, the founder of the nation, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who desired
to see Pakistan’s future as a Maritime Nation. Immediately after the creation of
Pakistan, initiatives were taken and his dream came true. A project known as
“Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Worked Limited”, was approved in a Cabinet
meeting, presided by the first Prime Minister of Pakistan Mr. Liaquat Ali Khan, on the
pursuance of the first Naval Chief. The Establishment of the facility deemed the
creation of the Maritime Defence of Pakistan. The Project was funded by a loan
agreement signed in 1952 between the governments of Pakistan and Germany. In
1955, KS&EW came into existence as a project of Pakistan Industrial Development
Corporation (PIDC), and the first vessel was manufactured and handed over to
Karachi Port Trust (KPT).

KS&EW has transformed itself into a proficient, modern, and autonomous


commercial organization under the Ministry of
Defence Productions (MoDP). The vision is to
make KS&EW a leading Shipyard and Heavy
Engineering facility in this region and to contribute
towards the technical development of Pakistan
with its true potential and ideal location.
Shipbuilding being a labor-intensive industry has
the potential to directly contribute towards Shipbuilding Team
Economic development and poverty alleviation.
KS&EW is situated at West Wharf Road, Karachi, and spread over an area of 71
acres. Besides that, KS&EW has the requisite infrastructure and facilities for Ship
Repairs and Heavy General Engineering-related works. KS&EW is the oldest and
the only Heavy Engineering Complex in Pakistan and the largest one in the Southern
Region. Recently, KS&EW has successfully embarked upon the construction of the
most modern warships and submarines which has opened new vistas for this sole
shipyard of Pakistan. The capabilities include multiple large shipbuilding halls, 03 x
shipbuilding berths, 12 x parking stations for Ship Repair as a part of Slip Lift &
Transfer System (SLTS), 02 x graving docks, 500 m and 165 m long quay walls,
various workshops, and supporting facilities.

Management of KS&EW is focused to provide quality services and products with
100% customer satisfaction while ensuring adherence to
all local and International Standards. KS&EW has
acquired certifications in Integrated Management System
from (IMS) from M/s Lloyds Register UK which includes
Safety Management System (SMS) ISO 45001:2018,
Quality Management System (QMS) ISO 9001:2015 and
Environmental Management System (EMS) ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001. In
addition, Shipbuilding projects are also certified by the Classification Society as per
the requirement of the Customer.

Shipbuilding (SB) is a highly complex, competitive, and capital-intensive industry. SB


department has so far constructed over 500 vessels of different sizes, designs, and
capabilities for various valued customers like, Pakistan Navy, Pakistan National
Shipping Corporation, KPT, Port Qasim Authority, Gwadar Port Authority, Pakistan
Customs, Pakistan Maritime Security Agency, and several International customers
like Saudi Arabia, Belgium, China, Iran, and UAE. SB is well equipped to construct
various types of vessels including Warships up to 26,000 DWT. Depending upon the
tonnage of under-construction projects more than 10 vessels can be undertaken at
the same time, utilizing the opportunity of 03 x shipbuilding berths, a 500 m long
quay wall, associated shipbuilding workshops, and a state-of-the-art environmentally
controlled painting and grit blasting facility.

During the mid-90s, KS&EW started the construction of warships. The first naval
vessel was a missile craft (PNS SHUJAAT) for
Pakistan Navy. Later on, a 4000-ton lifting
capacity dock with self-docking pontoons was
constructed for PN. KS&EW has also been
associated with the construction of the most
intricate part of Agosta-90B Submarines (i.e.
the pressure hull and associated non-pressure PN Fleet Tanker undergoing sea trials
structure). KS&EW’s work on the pressure hull
has won quality recognition by Direction des
Constructions Navels (M/s DCN), France. During
recent years, KS&EW has constructed 2 x
Tankers cum Utility Ships, F-22P Frigate, 2 x
FAC(M)s, Fleet Tanker, Maritime Patrol Vessel
for PMSA, several Tugs, Dredge Tenders, Utility
Vessels, Bridge Erection Boats for Pak Army,
etc. The current undergoing projects include 02 Artistic view of MILGEM Corvette
x MILGEM Class corvettes, 03 x 16 T Pusher
Tugs, 01 x 48 T BP Tug, FAC(M), 01 x Gun Boat, and 04 x GRP Boats.

KS&EW is proud to claim that the latest under construction FAC(M) has been
indigenously designed by Maritime Technologies
Complex and is being constructed without
collaboration or assistance from a foreign yard. The
complete Kit of Material package has been procured
by KS&EW comprising several locally developed
items. The vessel is equipped with state-of-the-art
Indigenously Designed FAC(M) systems and an indigenously developed Harbah
Ready for Launching Weapons system.

The Ship Repair facility has a comprehensive
setup for repairing, rebuilding, and overhauling
naval and commercial vessels with high-quality
standards. Integrated services are provided
through a highly qualified workforce. Its
capabilities include 02 x dry docks, cranes, 165
m Quay Wall, and modern tools to undertake
above and underwater repairs\maintaining low
overheads. It encourages the local industries and
besides, the facility has repaired over 5000 ships Vessels under repair at Dry Dock
that include 230 ships for foreign customers like China, Turkey, Korea, Singapore,
and UAE, etc. To enhance the ship repair
capacity, a state-of-the-art Ship Lift & Transfer
System (SLTS) is installed and completely
functional, to lift and park 12 x ships up to 8,000
Tons from the sea bed to land for quick repair
cycles.

Heavy General Engineering (GE) is capable to


undertake projects like marine structure
fabrication, portal/luffing/overhead cranes, dams
and barrage gates, towers, rollers for sugar

requirement. The recent projects include
fabrication of 3000 tons marine platform, Sukkar barrage gates, Rollers for various
sugar mills including local and customers from far east, etc. GE is focused on
building dam doors of Sukkur Barrages as well as for building for the new dams
being constructed in Pakistan, which are Dasu Dam Hydropower Plant, Mohmand
Dam Hydropower Plant, Balakot Dam Hydropower Project & Suki Kinari Dam HP
Plant in affiliation with CGGC.

A state-of-the-art Shipyard Training School (STS) at KS&EW is contributing to


broadening the nation's industrial base, economic development, and employment
opportunities. Currently, STS is undertaking various programs that include ASAAN
ROZGAR, 3 years Diploma of Associate Engineer (DAE), and short courses in
electrical, mechanical, and ship construction technologies, etc. STS is conducting
technical training in collaboration with NAVTTC in the field of various technical
trades. The institute has so far trained more than 25,000 individuals in different
cadres. Further, the STS has enhanced their scope of training that includes Paid
Internship Program, Management Trainee Officers (MTO) and Supervisors (MTS)
Training Program, Commercial Courses affiliated with STEVTA, technical training
programs in various trades in collaboration and sponsored by NAVTTC In addition,
KS&EW has a well equipped in house laboratory to carry out all types of chemical
and mechanical testing per International Standards.

KS&EW is the only Shipyard of Pakistan and has been silently serving the nation
with its continuous effort of building ships for Nation Building and carrying the slogan
“Made in Pakistan”. KS&EW has also played a pivotal role in transferring
technologies and broadening the industrial base of the country. KS&EW has
constructed over 500 vessels of different sizes and repaired more than 5000 vessels
and has the capacity and capability to provide new as well as replacement of all
floating platforms
up to 26,000 DWT.
