ENG-116: Branches of Linguistics: Books) .Farmer, A. K Demers, R. A. A Linguistics Workbook
Course Description The aim of the course is to describe and illustrate basic concepts within
the main branches of Linguistics. The course will also introduce
the linguistic material, in form of activities, to the students to conduct the
practical analysis of the authentic texts. Learners will be required to
perform the activity tasks by applying their understanding about
transcription techniques, tree-diagram constructions, codeswitching,
conversation analysis, etc.

Goals • The course aims at introducing the students with the current
approaches and methods of analysis in Linguistics.
• The course also aims to enable students to apply the
theories & concepts in Linguistics for the analysis of the
texts drawn from different settings. .

The students with less than 70% of the attendance in a course shall be
given the grade SA (Short Attendance) in such a course and shall not be
allowed to take its End Term Exams and will have to reappear in the
course to get the required attendance to be eligible to sit in the exam
when the course is offered the next time.
Grading The course will be evaluated on the basis of the following percentage:
