1 GENERAL
1.1 INTRODUCTION
This manual must be used together with the ‘Service Manual Installation’ for stationary Achieva systems,
further called SMI, when installing a system in a trailer.

This manual only describes the mobile specific 'installation steps' and the 'setting to work actions', which
differ from the installation of a stationary Intera / Achieva system. However, in general a mobile system equals
the stationary system very close.

The trailer manufacturer does the mechanical installation (installing the magnet, cabinets, etc), in cooperation
with Philips Healtcare.

It is assumed that the magnet and the rest of the mobile Achieva system parts are available at the installation
site, which normally this is the plant of the trailer manufacturer.

The trailer must meet the trailer and service requirements mentioned in the ‘MR mobile Van Planning Guide’,
before the installation can start. This will avoid any delays during the installation. All trailer manufacturers are
provided with a copy of the MR mobile Van Planning Guide and receives updates when required.
The ‘Van Planning Guide MR mobiles’ can be found on InCenter, selecting: Service Î PRD Î Main page Î
781 MR Î Achieve Î Mobile 2007 Dec.

Please notice that this medical equipment must comply with the requirements of the applicable EMC
standards. Electronic equipment exceeding the radiation limits defined in such EMC standards, like Cellular
phones and other handheld mobile equipment, may affect the proper functioning of our equipment.

For further general remarks and introduction items, refer to Section 1 'General' of the SMI for the stationary
system.

1.3 MAGNETIC FIELDS AND MOBILES

• The fringe field outside the trailer of a mobile Achieva system is significantly reduced, compared to the
fringe field of stationary Achieva systems. This is achieved with passive magnetic shieldings inside both
the side walls, the rear wall and floor of the trailer.

• This passive magnetic shielding in a mobile Achieva results in a fringe field with the 5 Gauss line inside
the trailer wall (European mobiles) or at most 6 inches outside the trailer wall (USA mobiles).

NOTE

The fringe field near the magnet under the trailer and on top of the trailer exceeds 5 Gauss.
Also, when the rear door is opened, the fringe field will exceed 5 Gauss.
________________

For further details refer to the SMI for the stationary system: section 1 paragraph 11.

1.4 HELIUM LIQUID OR GAS IN MOBILES

Mobile Achieva systems have an active helium exhaust line and a passive helium exhaust line (A 3T magnet,
or 1.5T rampable to 3T has two passive helium exhaust lines).
The active helium exhaust line is the quench line, which is connected to the burst disk of the gas exhaust
system of the magnet. A by-pass in parallel to the burst-disk line, helium gas vaporizes during normal
operation and extra loss of helium gas during helium refills is vented out of the trailer. During a quench the
pressure breaks the burst disk and the vaporized helium is vented out of the trailer.
The passive helium exhaust line is connected to the vacuum port burst disk. This exhaust path has to be
considered as an emergency outlet. It only becomes active in the very rare situation that the normal exhaust
path inside the cryostat is blocked, and the helium vessel ruptures as a result of excessive high pressure.
In this situation the vacuum ‘drop-plate’ will open and the connected gas exhaust line. The chance that this
will happen is extremely low.

For ‘safety with helium liquid or gas' refer to section 1 paragraph 11 of the SMI.

1.5 RETURN PROCEDURE FOR DEFECT PARTS DURING INSTALLATION

For mobile systems, which are being installed is the USA, all spare part handling goes through PMSNA and is
identical as with stationary systems.

When the country of installation (mostly for trailer manufacturer plants within Europe) is different from the
country of destination of the mobile system and when the required spare parts delay the installation if the
system, it is advised to use next procedure.
For smaller parts that do not affect image quality and proper operation of the system, it is advised have these
exchanged when the mobile is at its destination.

Procedure:
1. Contact the Customer Services Manager of the responsible SSD.
2. Inform him that you urgently need a spare part to be able to continue the installation.

The responsible SSD has to contact their SPS contact with the following information:
• Invoice to: address and funloc code
• Ship to: address and funloc code
• Name, phone/fax of the responsible engineer who will receive the parts
• The required transportation option of the parts
• 12NC number of the part, quantity and description

3. Return the defective part if applicable.

2 MAGNET INSTALLATION
Normally the system will be preassembled at the Philips factory.

2.1 ASSEMBLING THE MAGNET OUTSIDE THE TRAILER

The following parts are needed to install a magnet into the trailer:
• A stationary magnet
• A mobile conversion kit (mobile transfer line, extra shim iron, magnet mounting brackets, mountain vent
kit, drawings and instructions).
• A cryo-cooler compressor with flexible gas lines

If the system is not factory pre-assembled, it is advised to install the following parts to the magnet while it is
still out-side the trailer:
• Mounting the ring frames. Refer to the SMI, section 4, Mechanical installation (Part1).
• Installing the gradient coil. Refer to the SMI, section 4, Mechanical installation (Part1).

2.1.1 THE SERVICE PLATFORM.

Attach the service platform at the left side of the magnet (as seen from the patient site). See Figure 1.

2.2 INSTALLING MAGNET IN THE TRAILER

Normally the trailer manufacturer takes care of installing the magnet into the trailer.

2.2.1 INTRODUCTION

Depending on the type of trailer, the magnet can be loaded from the rear, or through the roof into the trailer.

The trailer manufacturer is already familiar with the various aspects of the installation of the magnet in the
trailer, like:
• The location and accuracy of the fixation points of the magnet.
• The mechanical requirements with respect of the forces during transport.
• The magnet dimensions.

2.2.2 MOBILE MAGNET FEET

Notice the adjustable magnet feet for Achieva magnets are not used.

For a detailed drawing how to mount the feet to the magnet and to the trailer floor, refer to the documentation
as delivered with the mobile conversion kit.

Figure 2 - Mobile magnet foot

Insulation ring

Insulation plate

2.2.3 MAGNET FIXATION HOLES

The position of the four holes to fixate the magnet to the trailer floor must be determined by the trailer
manufacturer according the ‘MR mobile Van Planning Guide. The trailer manufacturer also drills the required
holes needed and supplies the required fixation bolts.
The trailer manufacturer is responsible for the correct installation of the magnet.

2.2.4 LEVELING THE MOBILE ACHIEVA MAGNET

After the magnet has been positioned according the lay-out of the mobile system on the insulation sheets,
delivered by the trailer manufacturer, the magnet is leveled as follows:

1. Place a straight beam with a length of approximately 1.5 meters on top of the gradient carrier at the
front of the magnet. Measure the distance between the bottom side of this beam and the trailer floor at
the right and left side of the magnet, at a position close to the trailer wall.
2. Repeat this measurement at the rear gradient carrier of the magnet.
3. The four distances must be close to 735 mm. The differences between the measured distances must
be smaller than 4 mm. If not, thin compensating sheets (to be provided by the trailer manufacturer)
must be added under one ore more feet, until the magnet levels within specification.
4. Remove all shock-indicators from the magnet feet.

2.2.5 INSULATION MEASUREMENTS

The magnet, must be electrically insulated from the trailer.
These measurements must be performed before the mains, earth and signal cables are connected to the
magnet.

The following resistance values must be measured:

Measuring points Spec.
Magnet - RF enclosure >200 kΩ

Write down the measured values in the MRL, section 21 of the SMI for stationary systems.

2.2.6 INSTALLATION OF THE MOBILE MAGNET MOUNTAIN VENT KIT

For installation of the 'mobile magnet mountain vent kit' (MVK) refer to the documentation, as shipped with the
kit. Figure 3 shows how the mountain vent valve must be installed.

SMI mobile addendum

The MVK is designed and applied to prevent under pressure inside the LHe can of the super conductive.
magnets, independent of the global location or altitude of the trailer. The main component of the MVK is the
‘Absolute Pressure Relief Valve’ (APRV), which maintains a constant pressure of 1083 mBar (15.7 PSI) in
the LHe can, which results in an over pressure of, in case the environmental pressure is 1000 mBar (sea
level), ~ 83 mBar.
If the trailer goes up the mountain, the environmental pressure decreases, and the pressure difference
between inside and outside LHe can increases. In case the trailer is going down the hill, the environmental
pressure increases, and the differential pressure decreases. But, because of the absolute pressure inside
the LHe can, there is never a situation that the pressure inside the LHe can becomes lower than the
environmental pressure!

As a safety precaution the MVK is also provided with a ‘Differential Pressure Relief Valve’ (DPRV), which is
blowing off, in case there is a failure with the APRV. The set point of the DPRV is 5 PSI ( 345 mBar). This
results in a pressure difference between the inside and outside the LHe can, which will never become > 345
mBar. By design, the pressure shall always be between ~ 80 and 345 mBar.

2.2.7 MOUNTING THE ACTIVE AND PASSIVE HELIUM GAS EXHAUST

Next pictures show the installed active and passive helium gas exhaust.

Figure 4 – Helium gas exhausts

Passive helium exhaust

Active helium exhaust

If there is not enough space above the magnet, it is necessary to turn the elbow in the active helium exhaust
(the quench line) 90 degrees to the left or to the right. This is depending on which side of the trailer the wall
feed-through is installed. See Figure 5. Te RF load has been removed and positioned somewhere else, to
allow the installation of the active helium exhaust.

CAUTION

When the elbow has to be rotated, a new hole must be drilled in the lowest part of the elbow,
which will allow water to drain from it.

________________

The mobile system delivery does not include parts of the gas exhaust system. The connection lines between
the magnet interface and ports in the trailer wall have to be provided by the trailer manufacturer. Both quench
lines must be thermally insulated.
Refer to SMI: section 3 Mechanical installation (part 1), chapter 'Mounting the gas exhaust lines'.

A 3T magnet has a bigger helium exhaust line (20 cm diameter) compared to 1.5T magnets, ensure that the
gradient suspension doesn’t interfere with the helium exhaust line.

The 3T magnet has two passive helium exhaust lines, diameter 10 cm.

MAGNET SIDE

Please notice the following remarks:

• The mobile helium transfer line is significantly longer (see Figure 16), compared to the stationary transfer
line, because the helium dewar cannot be positioned as close to the magnet as with stationary systems.
Approximately 80 % of the liquid helium can be transferred from the dewar.
• The mobile helium transfer line must be stored in the trailer.

WARNING

Because of limited the space above the magnet and to avoid dangerous situations like shortage of oxygen
because of the vented helium gas, which is lighter than oxygen,
the top-hatch of the trailer must be open during the refill procedure.

SMI mobile addendum

Procedure:
1. Position the dewar outside the mobile trailer, close to the open rear door.
2. Insert the transfer line slowly in the dewar. This procedure is identical to the stationary refill
procedure.
3. Open the yellow ball valve on top of the magnet.
4. The pre-cooling of the transfer line will take more time than pre-cooling a stationary transfer line.
Wait until a white plume is visible at the end of the transfer line. The service engineer must be on top
of the magnet during pre-cooling the transfer line, to make it possible to insert the transfer line as
soon as the line is cooled down sufficiently.
5. Insert the transfer line into the magnet, and continue as described for the stationary situation.
6. Be careful at the moment the dewar becomes empty: if warm gas enters the magnet space via the
transfer line because of an empty dewar, a quench of the magnet will be the result if it is on field, or if
it will go on field within 12 hours. Therefore check continuously the pressure in the dewar: if it is
decreasing the dewar is empty and then the refill process must be stopped immediately (close He
gas supply or switch off heaters in dewar).

NOTE

The fringe field near the magnet under the trailer and on top of the trailer exceeds 5 Gauss.
________________

If a second dewar must be connected, use the following procedure:

1. If according the liquid helium level meter, the first dewar will be empty soon. Place the second
dewar close to the one in use. Be sure that the dewar side of the transfer line can be inserted in the
second dewar easily.
2. The over pressure inside the second dewar shall be positive, but low (~ 0.5 PSI).
3. Close the supply of helium gas or switch off the heater of the dewar in use.
4. Wait until the pressure in the dewar has reached sufficient low value (close to zero). Be sure that the
second dewar is ready to receive the transfer line (all couplings checked and loosened).
5. If the flow of the liquid helium in the transfer line has become almost zero, remove the transfer line
as quick as possible out of the first dewar. (Because of the reasonable height difference, a staircase
must be present). After that the transfer line shall be inserted in the second dewar as quick as
possible. Lowering the dewar part of the transfer line shall be done not too fast, to avoid sudden
pressure variations.
6. As soon the transfer line has reached the bottom of the dewar, the transfer line shall be raised 1 cm.
At last the coupling on top of the dewar is tightened. The pressure inside the second dewar shall be
increased to approximately 8 PSI.
7. Continue the refill procedure as described above.
8. Close the yellow ball valve on top of the magnet at the end of the procedure.

For further details refer to the SMI for the stationary system: section 10.

8.4 MOUNTING THE CEILING SPEAKERS

CAUTION

Be sure not to penetrate or make contact with the RF shielding

when installing the speaker boxes inside the RF room.
________________

In the examination room the ceiling speaker is mounted in the suspended ceiling. The trailer manufacturer
must provide a mounting surface for the speaker behind the magnet at the back of the trailer.

8.5 GRADIENT COIL AND PATIENT AIR-COOLING SYSTEM

The gradient fan is either installed near the ceiling in the space behind the magnet, depending upon trailer
type, in or outside the RF room. When installed inside the fan motor must be inside an RF enclosure.
The performance of the gradient air cooling system and the airflow of this fan is the responsibility of the trailer
manufacturer (in accordance with the Phillips requirements).

NOTE

A too high airflow can cause ghost artifacts while imaging.

Because there is not always enough ceiling space, for some trailers the airduct must be modified to be able
install the air hoses. See Figure 26.

together again the other way around.

For more details on the gradient coil cooling system, refer to section 13 chapter 2 ‘Checking the air cooling
system’ in the SMI for stationary systems.
For more details on the patient ventilation system, refer to section 5 chapter 7 ‘Mounting the patient cooling
unit’ in the SMI for stationary systems.

8.6 INSTALLATION OF THE PATIENT SUPPORT

For the installation of the patient support refer to SMI section 7. Mobile and stationary installation is identical.

8.7 ELECTRICAL INSULATION MEASUREMENTS

The patient support must be electrically insulated from the RF Room.
These measurements must be performed before the mains, earth and signal cables are connected to the
patient support.

The resistance between the patient support and the RF enclosure must be measured, the spec is > 200 kΩ
Write down the measured value in the MRL .

After the measurement all the cables from the patient support can be connected to the system.

8.8 RF-ROOM ATTENUATION

After installation of the magnet, the patient support and the system filter box, the RF-room attenuation should
be measured. Meeting the specification is the responsibility of the trailer manufacturer. The measurement may
be done by an external company. Of course, metal wool must be stuffed in the gas lines feed-through and the
system filter box must be closed before this measurement is done.
It is important to have these measurements done after installation of the above mentioned items, because
compared to a stationary system more 'RF-leaks' are possible. (e.g.: Holes in the (RF) floor, a hatch, two RF-
doors, two helium exhaust feed-troughs, gas lines feed-troughs, etc).

9 SIGNAL CABLES
9.1 GRADIENT CABLES

• Cables of each gradient coil channel have to be paired in bundles of 4 cables (as shipped), to minimize
interference with the magnet. In practice this means that 3 cable bundles for Achieva PULSAR/QUASAR
systems and 6 cable bundles for Achieva NOVA dual/ QUASAR dual systems. Gradient cables have to
be fixed to each other by cable-binders. The recommended distance between 2 cable-binders is 15 cm or
less.

• The routing of the gradient cables from the magnet to the system filter box depends on the inside
configuration of the trailer. This can be different for every trailer manufacturer See Figure 27 for an
example. The best possible routing for the gradient cables is along the ceiling.

• To minimize interaction between gradient cables and magnet the distance between cables and magnet
has to be as far as possible.

• After installation of the gradient cables check if the cables cannot move. If yes, improve the fixation, add
cable-binders, to ensure that the fixation is optimal.

• Check with a heavy scan that the gradient cables cannot move or vibrate. If they do, the installation has to
be improved by adding cable-binders, or by changing the position of the gradient cables.

11 REMARKS TO MAGNET ADJUSTMENT

11.1 RAMPING THE MAGNET OF A MOBILE SYSTEM

The preferred route for the current lead cables is through the RF door and then through to the left-upper
opening in the facade. The cables should not pass close to the magnet because if they are energized they
can start moving towards the magnet.

For the rest of the ramping procedure refer to section 16 in the SMI for stationary systems.

11.2 SHIMMING THE MAGNET OF A MOBILE SYSTEM

There is no difference in the shimming process for a mobile magnet or a stationary magnet.

However, before you start to shim the magnet in the mobile take notice of the following:

1. The trailer must be placed on the rear jack-stands and level.

2. The trailer rear door must be closed.
3. The trailer patient lift must be in the upper position.
4. The trailer top hatch must be closed.
5. The patient support must be in the upper position (as with a stationary systems).

For the further details of shimming process, refer to section 16 in the SMI for stationary systems.

12 MOVING A TRAILER TO AN OTHER LOCATION

Mobile MRI systems will be moved between different hospitals. Since every site has different magnetic
environments for the MRI system, it is advised to perform next described adjustments, after re-locating the
mobile MRI system.

12.1 THE LCC-II / CRYO COMPRESSOR ON GENERATOR POWER

NOTE

During transport the gMDU of the MRI system is powered form the onboard generator.
Since the cold head must be running and MEU must be on during transport,
Q2 and F7 must remain switched on.
As a result the LCCII with cryo compressor and SFB (as result MEU) will stay powered on.
________________

The MEU must stay switched on since it controls the performance of the F50 4K cryo compressor.

12.2 MOBILE RE-ADJUSTMENTS AFTER RE-LOCATING THE TRAILER

After re-locating the trailer to another hospital site, the resonance frequency might be out of range and the
shimming of the linear components (compensated with offsets in the gradient channels) might be out of spec,
because of the changed magnetic environment.

To guarantee optimal image quality at all sites after re-locating the trailer, next system level adjustments must
always be performed before the patient examinations are started.

At this point it is assumed that you have started the Service Application.
Refer to Section 11 chapter 1.2 on how to start the Service Application.
1. Select System Adjustment → Test and Tuning Procedures → Mobile procedures

12.3 F0 DETERMINATION

1. Select F0 determination
After reading the instructions, the measurement must be started with Proceed
When the frequency is within specification, no adjustment is necessary.

Specifications:
