5-paragraph Essay
I’ve been learning English since 2019, when I started my professional career at UNAD
University, and it has been such a really incredible experience that I’m still living. When I
started the career, I only had a little basic knowledge, maybe vocabulary that I learnt from
some friends, music, and TV shows influences, nothing more. My grammar and
communicative skills were terrible! I think it’s still the most difficult part for me and I need
to improve in it soon. Personally, I think that what I like the best of learning English is all
the opportunities to improve in every different aspects of your life and see my personal
progress makes me feel incredibly proud of myself. Still, although the road may be
difficult, there are a lot of things that I love of learning this beautiful language.
Before started studying my career, I thought it will be a terrible starting because the only
basic knowledge that I had was thanks to my friends and internet influence (with basic
knowledge I’m referring to how to say hello and good-bye). But no! actually I wasn’t that
bad as I thought, I understood the topics really easily, but listening, speaking and grammar
was my perdition, I can even remember my first speaking session, oh my God, it was
horrible! But with I knew that with practicing I could overcome all those obstacles.
The most difficult thing that I’ve had to face since when I started this learning process was
speaking. This have been one of the things that gave me a headache because I didn’t know
how to be fluent to express what I was thinking so I basically was just like “okay, I want to
say this… but HOW?” and it was so frustrating. I remember that during my first speaking
sessions of the first semester my pronunciation was terrible, but I did my best to improve in
every class and even after the sessions a kept practicing talking with myself… Sounds
weird, I know, but trust me, it works. Another obstacle that I had with my English progress,
especially at the beginning, was that I was too shy to speak! I’ve never been a self-
confident person, I’m the introvert type and we all know that feeling insecure and speaking
sessions in a language that’s not yours isn’t a very good combination. So, you can imagine
the anxiety that I felt before every session and the enormous fear of try to speak and fail in
the attempt.
Although all the difficulties in my way of learning English, there are many positive aspects
that made me totally fell in love with this amazing language. The part that I like the most of
learning English is when I really enjoy the process. I really like that I can learn English by
doing things that I like, for example: listening to music, watching videos or series in
English, playing video-games, reading online, and the list of creative and imaginative ways
of learn English at the same time that you have fun is infinite. Also, you can make friends
from other parts of the world who also speak English or are learning English and practice
with them, now with social media and new technologies this is even more easy! I’ve made
a lot of online friends on Instagram from different countries and while we have
when I talk to them, because I’m still learning! But commit mistakes makes part of every
learning process, and the important thing is never giving up and keep going with practicing.
To conclude with this essay about my English learning journal, this experience of learning
English as my second language is for real a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will change a
lot of aspects in my life, no matter the difficulties and obstacles that I may encounter along
the way, I know that I will always find a way to overcome them and achieve my goal of
