The document is a presentation on functions, domains, and ranges. It defines a function as a rule that assigns a unique output value to each input value. It provides examples of functions and non-functions. It then defines domain as the set of allowable input values and range as the set of output values. Examples are given to illustrate domain and range for different functions.

What is Function
&
Example ?

► If X and Y one two non-empty sets and f is

such a rule that give unique y Є Y for each x Є
X then f is called a function from the set X to
the set Y.
It is denoted by f:x → y or y = f(x)

What is Domain
&
Example ?

► If x and y one related by the equation y = ƒ(x) then

the set of all allowable x values is called the
domain.

Page - 5
Example :
► ƒ(x) = x+5. x Є ℝ
Here ƒ(x) gives the real values for all real values of
x Domain of f, Df = ℝ
Again y = ƒ(x)
=> y = x + 5
=> x = y – 5
Here x gives the real values for all real values of y.
Range of f, Rf = ℝ
Page - 6
What is Range
&
Example ?

 If x and y one related by the equation y = ƒ(x) then

the set of all allowable x values is called the
domain. Of f and the set of all y values that result
when x varies over the domain is called the range
of f.

Page - 7
Example :
 ƒ(x) = 2/x+3, x Є ℝ
Here f(x) gives the real values for all real values of x,
except at x = -3, Domain of f,
Df = ℝ-{-3}
Again, y = 2/x+3
=> y(x+3) = 2
=> xy+3y = 2
=> xy = 2-3y
=> x = 2-3y/y
Here x gives the real values for all real values of y except
at y=0,
Range of f , ℝf = ℝ – {0}
