Communication takes place when a sender transmits a message to a recipient using a medium. There are various mediums for communication including visual cues, sounds, touch, smells, and writing. Communication can be both verbal and nonverbal, and it occurs among both humans and animals. Graphic design is a form of visual communication that arranges images and text to effectively convey a message to others. It involves the artistic arrangement of typography, illustrations, and page layout to inform and decorate textual works. The goal is to attract attention to the subject matter through visually engaging designs.

COMMUNICATION
Communication
Communication is
when information is
passed from a sender
to a recipient using a
medium. There are
different media that
can be used:
Visual communication Communication using
(using mimics or touch
gestures)
Using smell
Communicating with
sounds (like human Using writing
language, but may
also be the barking of
a dog)
Communication can is done without
be spoken (a word) or thinking, such as by
non-spoken (a smile). changing in posture
Communication has
many ways, and
happens all the time.
Not only humans
communicate, most
other animals do too.
Some communication
How communication
works
Communication works
by exchanging
information or
messages. In very
basic terms
1. The sender makes 3. The recipient
a message, from an receives the message
idea. This is usually and decodes it.
called encoding

2. The sender
transmits the message
through the medium.
COMMUNICATION
Besides the content of the message, there are
other things that are important. These are not part
of the message itself, but rather of its context

Who is communicating, and what status does

the communicator have.

Communication messages usually do not

come alone, but are accompanied by other
messages. These are also interpreted.
For a message exchange to be successful, the
sender and the recipient must have agreed on a
vocabulary. The word hedge can mean completely
different things based on the context. In biology a
hedge is a row of shrubs or trees that make a
barrier or form a border. In finance, a hedge is an
investment made to reduce the risk of another
investment. In linguistics a hedge is a word or set
of words that make other words less important.
Without any information it is therefore very difficult
to know which hedge is really meant by the
speaker.

Graphic Design
Graphic design is a practical art which helps
communication. Visual information is formed in a
way that it produces a message. This can be done
by placing words and pictures in ways that will get
the attention of others. People who do graphic
design as work are called graphic designers. In
printed media, graphic design includes
typography, organising illustration, book design,
page layout, specifying print.
Typography

Typography is a practical art: the art of arranging

how the printed word shall appear on the page.[1]
Typography was born when print was born.
Indeed, the early types were copies of the
letterforms of scribes, and the design of roman
type was modelled on type used on Trajan's
column.
Typography includes not only letters, but all the set
of symbols in a font, and it includes the overall
design of a page or document. It applies to any
medium which may be read; therefore it includes
text on computer screens. A typographer may
design type, select fonts, and design the layout of
pages and books. The term does not cover the act
of printing itself, though many of the early printers
were themselves typographers.
Illustration
An illustration is a picture that tries to get the
person looking at it to pay more attention to the
subject than to the art. Illustrations can be in the
form of a drawing, painting, photograph or other
work of art.

Illustrations often have one of two purposes. One

is to give light to the subject. The other purpose is
to decorate an informational text (such as a
newspaper or article).
Graphic design can be done in different media.
These include paper, video, labels, and web sites.

"Graphic design" is a vast and varied discipline,

using many skills, rules and techniques to be able
to provide the right information. It is both a
combination of artistic expression and media
relations.
