Cantilever Retaining Wall

The document provides parameters for designing a retaining wall including the height of retained soil, unit weights, soil properties, surcharge pressure, and dimensions of the wall and its components. Calculations are shown for lateral earth pressures, forces and moments on the wall, and checks for overturning stability, sliding stability, and bearing capacity. Reinforcement design calculations are presented for the toe, heel, and stem of the wall to resist shear and flexural stresses. Reinforcement requirements and spacing are specified.

Thickness of base slab, t = 520mm
Thickness of stem at base = 520mm
Thickness of stem at top = 200mm
Length of heel slab including stem thickness = 3.5m

Passive 3 3

Earth Pressure analysis :

Lateral Earth pressure due to backfill soil, Pa =349.758 kN
@ 2.368 m from bottom of heel slab.
Lateral Earth pressure due to surcharge, Ps =71.05 kN
@ 3.553 m from bottom of heel slab.
Resultant pressures at the base and moment of forces about the bottom of the heel.

Force (kN) distance form heel (m) Moment (kNm)

Wall 105.955 2.89 305.756

Soil 271.267 1.58 427.371

vertical earth pressure 210.404 0 0

Total 587.626 4.47 733.127

Stability against overturning :

Overturning moment, Mo =733.127 kNm
Net moment due to lateral earth pressure about heel = 935.886 kNm
Distance of resultant vertical force from heel = 1.248 m
Stablizing moment (about Toe), Mr = 2351.679 kNm
Factor of safety against overturning, FSoverturning = 2.26
Soil Pressure at footing base :
eccentricity of vertical reaction from CG of footing, e = 0.22 m
resultant Pressure is acting within middle one-third of footing, so no tension in soil.
Maximum Pressure on soil at the base 140.071 kN/m 2 is less than safe bearing capacity
of soil 250 kN/m2
Minimum Pressure on soil at the base = 83.787 kN/m2. So, no tension at base

Check for Sliding stability:

Frictional Resistance, F = 274.015 kN
Sliding force, Fr = 364.43 kN
A shear-key has been provided to balance the sliding force:
Distance of shear-key from toe of footing = 4.5 m
Width of shear key = 650 mm
Depth of shear key = 300 mm
Passive resistance provided by shear key = 326.77 kN
Factor of safety against sliding, FSsliding = 1.48

Toe Slab :
Provide 8mmφ bars @ 50mm c/c at the bottom of the toe slab.
The bars should extend by at least a distance Ld = 20mm beyond the front face of the
stem, on both sides.
Also provide 10 φ bars @ 125 c/c as temperature and shrinkage reinforcement.
Heel Slab :
Provide 12mm φ bars @ 50mm c/c at the top of the heel slab.
The bars should extend by at least a distance Ld = 30mm beyond the rear face of the
stem, on both sides.
Also provide 10 φ bars @ 30mm c/c as temperature and shrinkage reinforcement.
Stem reinforcement:
Provide 10mm φ bars @ 50mm c/c at the rear face of the stem.
The bars should extend by at least a distance Ld = 15mm beyond the base of the stem.
The distance of the shear-key (if provided) may be adjusted so that the stem
reinforcements can be extended into the shear-key. The depth of shear key may be
increased to maintain passive resistance during this adjustment
Also provide 10 φ bars @ 125mm c/c as temperature and shrinkage reinforcement in
the lower half of the stem,
and 10 φ bars @ 180mm c/c as temperature and shrinkage reinforcement in the upper
half of the stem.
