Introduction To Computer

A computer is an electronic device that can accept data as input, process that data according to programmed instructions, produce output, and store that output for future use. It is designed to manipulate data quickly and accurately to generate useful information. Key characteristics of computers include that they are machines that operate using electronic circuits and electrical energy, can automatically manipulate and process data according to programmed rules, have memory to store instructions and recall information, and have logic functions to carry out programmed instructions. Computers have advantages like speed, accuracy, ability to perform repetitive tasks, and storing/recalling vast amounts of information, but also have disadvantages like requiring programming and regular electric power.

Introduction to
Computer
What is Computer?
A computer is an electronic device, operating under the control of instructions stored
in its memory that can accept data (input) , process the data according to the specified
rules, produce information (output), and store the information for the future use.

The word compute is derived from the Latin word

‘computare’, was meaning "arithmetic, accounting".

It is used to perform some sequence of instructions in fast and

accurate manner. Computer receives input in the form of
digitalized data, using input devices like keyboard, mouse,
joystick, scanner etc. It process based on a program instructions
to give output.
an electronic device designed to
manipulate data so that useful
information can be generated.

a programmable electronic
device designed to accept data,
perform prescribed
mathematical and logical
operations at high speed, and
display the results of these
operations.
Characteristics of a computer
It is a machine
- It is an inanimate object
- It needs outside intervention for it to run.
- It can only do things for which it was designed
It is electronic
- It is made up of electronic circuits
- It runs in electrical energy
It is automatic
- Once started, it continues to run without outside intervention
It can manipulate data
- Following several rules, it can perform arithmetic functions such as
MDAS
- It can compare data
It has memory
- It has the capacity to remember what it has done
- It can store instructions in its memory.
It has logic functions
- It can be given instructions which tell what it must do and how it must
do to them.
- It can produce results upon completion of these instructions
Capabilities of Computer
Speed - It can process data faster than any other machine assigned to
perform similar task
Repetitiveness - – It can perform repetitive tasks without fatigue or
boredom.
Accuracy – It can perform arithmetic operations at high speed and with
great precision
Logical operations – The computer can make decisions based on
alternative course of action and choices prepared for it by the
programmer.
Store and recall information – It can store and recall vast amount of
facts, information and instructions.
Self- Checking – The computer counts the number of characters it
has in storage to make sure there is no loss of data during
processing.

Self-operating – Once the data and the program are fed into the
computer’s memory, the computer is capable of executing the
instructions on its own, without human intervention.
ADVANTAGES
AND
DISADVANTAGES
OF
COMPUTER
Advantages of Using Computer

Computers can do the same task repetitively with

same accuracy.

Computers do not get tired or bored.

Computers can take up routine tasks while

releasing human resource for more intelligent
functions.
Disadvantages of Using Computer

Despite so many advantages, computers have some

disadvantages of their own −

Computers have no intelligence; they follow the instructions

blindly without considering the outcome.

Regular electric supply is necessary to make computers work,

which could prove difficult everywhere especially in
developing nations.
