music ensemble; we need EVERYONE on the team to be there. Concert dress code is “as nice as
possible”/dress clothes (no color requirement) and must be in accordance with the DCS dress
code. Both concerts will be held in the DCS auditorium. A reminder of these details will be sent
home on a reminder paper a week prior to the concert.

three tardies receive a referral.
2. Band warm-ups
3. Rehearsal and Instruction time
4. Announcements
Rules:
1. Be on time for class (band, lessons, concerts)
2. Be responsible for your actions. If your actions take away from the rehearsal, the behavior is
inappropriate and you must fix it (or you will be removed from class).
3. No talking when the band, section of the band, or individual is playing.
4. No talking when the director is on the podium or when he/she is talking.
5. Be in control of your actions
6. Be respectful of yourself, others, and the instruments (including sticks/mallets).
7. Always have a great attitude when we are making music together!
8. Have your music, folder, pencil and instrument (sticks/mallets for percussionists) at every
rehearsal!
9. No book bags or cell phones in the band room during class/rehearsal.
10. No chewing gum or eating food/drink in the music suite/area. WATER is good though!
**No sharing or borrowing instruments or music**
Responsibilities:
1. Have your instrument and music for every band rehearsal and lesson. This preparedness is
part of being “responsible” whether it be in band, math class, sports practice etc.
2. Have your instrument ready to play prior to the start of rehearsal (when the director stands
on the podium). Clean your instrument AFTER playing...every time!
3. Be prepared for rehearsals and lessons by practicing and knowing your music!
If quarantined: Have someone pick up your instrument/music from school. Then log into our Band
google meet during class time (1:37pm on B/D days) to participate and play along during class.
Any other rules or expectations will be discussed during band or are outlined in the DCS Code of Conduct. It is
an honor to be in such an ensemble, thus If a student has a difficult time following the rules and
responsibilities, they will be first given a verbal warning, second will be a lunch detention and/or if problems
continue they’ll be sent to the office or ISS and parents will be notified. Depending on the severity of the
offense or if a student continues to have problems in band, they will receive a referral.

Grading Policy:
30% -Attendance at lessons (all lessons will occurring DURING band until school is back to a
regular schedule)
30%-Music preparation and performance (lesson book assignments), concert music, solo music,
scales, and this includes performing and attending our two (winter/spring) concerts!
20%-Preparedness: having all your materials (music/instrument) for band rehearsals and lessons,
turning in any assignments given (this contract!)
20%-Participation: includes attitude/behavior during band rehearsals, lessons, and concerts.
Practice: In addition to band rehearsals, for the highest level of success students should practice their
instrument every week. Each time you practice, a good goal is 20 minutes! During the school day is fine
too! Remember there is a limited amount of time when students can come down to practice in the band
room. If a student is seen abusing this time and not practicing, they will not be given passes anymore so
that other students who want to practice, may use the time.
Yearly Instrument Rental: Students, who do not own their own instrument, can rent a school
instrument at the cost of $27 for the year (if more convenient you can pay $3 a month, or half now and
the other $13.50 in January). Students will get back a receipt of payment from their teacher. Students
may rent a school instrument all the way throughout high school. If you’re considering getting your own
instrument...ALWAYS consult your band director before purchasing an instrument so that you know
you’re getting a quality instrument for a good deal.
Percussion Students: The school graciously provides percussionists with sticks/mallets and a
stick bag. Percussionists who wish to rent a bell/snare pad kit from the school (to practice!), the above
rental policy applies. Students may choose to purchase their own sticks and mallets at any time, at which
point they can return their school equipment. Stick bags (with sticks/mallets inside) are to be returned,
in good condition and in their entirety, at the end of each school year and then re-signed out the
following year. If students would like to buy one pair of their own sticks or mallets from the school to
keep at home all the time, please let Miss Wolford know. If mallets, sticks or stick bag are not returned
at the end of the year students will be charged $11 for any snare sticks , $20 for bell mallets , $24 for
vibe/marimba mallets, $25 for timpani mallets, and $16 for the stick bag ($96 for everything if it is
lost/not returned). *Percussion students/parents sign the additional page attached*

We look forward to a great and musical year!! -Miss Wolford and Mr. Case

Percussion Usage Policy
Dear Percussionists and Parent
As of 2013, the school district graciously provides all percussion students with sticks/mallets and
a stick bag (herein referred to as “equipment”) as well as instruments to play on. Students will use this
school owned equipment in all their lessons, rehearsals and performances. This now ensures that all
students will have the proper sticks/mallets to play (as well as a bag to keep them in) and practice with at
all times. Students must understand that they are responsible for any damage or loss of the equipment.
Stick bags (with sticks/mallets inside) are to be returned, in good condition, at the end of each
school year and then resigned out the following year. Sticks/mallets and bags, as well as their condition,
are inventoried at the end of the school year (just like any other instrument). If the assigned mallets,
sticks and stick bag are not returned in full at the end of the year students will be charged a $95
replacement fee. During the school year, if students lose, abuse or cause damage to any sticks or mallets
provided by the school they will be charged to replace them at the cost of $11 for any snare sticks, $20 for
bell mallets, $24 for vibe/marimba mallets, $25 for timpani mallets, and $16 to replace a damaged stick
bag. If a high school student plays a specialty instrument in high school drum line (bass drum),
replacement bass drum sticks will cost $30. If students would like to buy a pair of sticks or mallets to
keep at home all the time (instead of transporting back and forth), please let Miss Wolford know. All
other equipment used in the band room are to be taken care of by the students, violation of this will incur
a replacement fee (in cases of damage) and/or removal from their spot in drumline/band. Students that
wish to rent a practice bell/snare pad kit, the cost is $27 for the school year (this is highly
recommended for students so that they may practice!).
By high school it is highly recommended that students purchase their own sticks (they need:
concert snare sticks, marching sticks, vibe/bell mallets, timpani mallets and stick bag) from a music store
or website, at which point they can turn in their school provided equipment. If students choose this
option, they still need to bring their personal sticks and stick bag to every lesson, band rehearsal, and
performance.
In regards to storage, students are allowed to keep their equipment in their locker or transport it to
and from school every day, so that they may practice. In keeping with school policy, the ONLY time
sticks/mallets are to be removed from their bag/case is in the music area (auditorium/band room/ band
office) during practice, lessons, rehearsals, performances or at home. Sticks/mallets are NOT to be
removed from their bag in any other part of the school building (hallways/classrooms) or on the school
bus. If a student does so, their equipment can be confiscated by staff. If either of these storage places is
not feasible, students can arrange a place, designated by Miss Wolford to store their bag. Storing stick
bags in the percussion section, on the floor, in a friend’s band cubby, other parts of the band room or
auditorium are not acceptable, as other people/students use these areas as well.
Due to the fact that every percussionist will be issued a bag, the sticks/mallets will be inventoried
by Miss Wolford and then labeled so that students know which bag is theirs. As students are personally
accountable for their own equipment, they are not to share or borrow someone else’s equipment to use.
This policy change has been decided on by the music department in an effort to have students be
responsible for their own musical equipment, just like any other instrumental student.
----------Detach and return-----------Detach and return-----------Detach and return-----------Detach and return----------

I acknowledge that I have read the percussion usage policy and will abide by it. I also accept
responsibility for care of any school issued equipment assigned to me and understand that if it is not
returned in full at the end of the year or well taken care of, I will be charged a $96 replacement fee.
