Satellite Parameters

This document provides details on how to enter satellite parameters in a satellite database. It describes the various sections for entering a satellite's characteristics, attitude, transmission/reception parameters, antenna details, polarization, and circular orbit (for non-geostationary satellites). Controls are also described for converting between power units, ignoring changes, confirming changes, and navigating between satellites.

Satellite parameters

Release number v1.0

Technical support
1. Introduction

The Satellite parameters box allows to enter the characteristics of a satellite that will be inserted in the
Satellite database, and it is accessible from:

• Parameters option found in the right-click popup of the Satellites box

• control of the Satellites box

The following box will be displayed:

Satellite parameters box

2. Parameters of the Satellite

Once the parameters are defined, the user may reopen this box and modify the parameters at any time
using the Parameters option of the Satellites box popup menu.

The box is organized according to several technical settings:

• Characteristics of the satellite (type, color, description....)
• The satellite attitude (Attitude area)
• Transmitting/Receiving (Tx/Rx parameters area)
• Antenna (Antenna area)
• Polarization (Polarization area)

Several additional controls are also offered.

2.1. Characteristics of the satellite

• Call sign: identification code of the satellite - this information is used to identify the satellite in
the database list.
• Color: color that will be used to represent the satellite and its coverage on the planisphere and
on the terrain - simply click left on the colored field to change the color.
• Type: satellite type - two different types: GSO or NGSO - the choice is given in a popup list.
• Description: free text information - this information is displayed in the satellite database list.
• Info zone: free text zone - press <Ctrl> + <Enter> keys to change line.
• Notice: Notice ID for Satellites imported from SRS database (ITU).
• Beam: beam name.
• Group ID Tx / Rx: group ID for transmission and reception.
• Model atten: attenuation in dB to be taken into account when simulation is run for the satellite
– the Recommendation 618 can also be applied: enter -1 in the field.
• n.o. subscribers: number of subscribers managed by the satellite - this field is automatically
given after "Resources" calculation.
• BW occupancy: occupancy of the bandwidth in MHz - this field is automatically given after
"Resources" calculation.
• loss: loss in dB - this field is not open and is automatically given according to the bandwidth of
the subscribers connected to the satellite.

2.2. Attitude

• Longitude: in degrees (from -180 to +180).

• Latitude: in degrees - only accessible for NGSO satellite type.
• StationKeepingError: in degrees.
• Distance to earth center: in kilometers - only accessible for NGSO satellite type.
• Boresight coord: mode of coordinates - 3 choices:
- earth boresight coordinates are valid - this choice opens the Boresight longitude and latitude
angles, the distance to Earth center and the Boresight orientation input fields - this also activates
the Coordinates ->Euler control.
- Euler angles only are valid - this choice opens the Distance to earth center, the Boresight
orientation, and the Boresight Euler angles phi, theta and psi input fields - this also activates the
Euler -> coordinates control.
- Both are valid - this choice opens all input fields and both controls.

Technical support Satellite parameters - 3/5

• Boresight longitude: in degrees (from -180 to +180) - only available in Earth boresight
coordinates or in Both mode.
• Boresight latitude: in degrees - only available in Earth boresight coordinates or in Both mode.
• Boresight earth center (dist): distance to the Earth center in kilometers.
• Boresight orientation: in degrees.
• Boresight Euler angle phi: in degrees - only available in Euler angles or in Both mode.
• Boresight Euler angle theta: in degrees - only available in Euler angles or in Both mode.
• Boresight Euler angle psi: in degrees - only available in Euler angles or in Both mode.
• : conversion of the Euler angles in Earth boresight coordinates - only available
in Euler angles or in Both mode.
• : conversion of the Earth boresight coordinates in Euler angles - only available
in Earth boresight coordinates or in Both mode.

2.3. Tx/Rx parameters

• Nominal power: in Watts.

• Max power: in Watts.
• Tx gain: in dB.
• Rx gain: in dB.
• Tx losses: in dB.
• Rx losses: in dB.
• ISO: Isofrequency mode - activate the mode by checking the ISO box.
• Tx frequency: in GHz.
• Tx bandwidth: in MHz.
• Rx frequency: in GHz.
• Rx bandwidth: in MHz.
• Rx antenna noise K: in Kelvin.
• G/T: Gain over temperature in dB/K - this field is automatically given according to the
parameters Noise parameters.
• Launch delay: in µsec.

2.4. Antenna

• Max pointing error (roll+pitch): in degrees.

• Max pointing error (rotation yaw): in degrees.
Max power: in watts.
• Pattern shape: 4 choices: circular pattern, elliptical, other or GXT.
o For GXT, select the corresponding file from “GXT file…” button.
• Pattern type: several choices are offered in the popup list.

According to the chosen pattern shape, following parameters are required:

• 1/2 power beamwidth 3 dB: in degrees - required with the circular shape of pattern.
• 1/2 power beamwidth 3 dB (major axis): in degrees - required with the elliptical shape of
pattern.
• 1/2 power beamwidth 3 dB (minor axis): in degrees - required with the elliptical shape of
pattern.

Technical support Satellite parameters - 4/5

Choose between options:
o Add 2 x Pointing Error to beamwidth.
o No error.

2.5. Polarization

• Clockwise.
• Polar axial ratio (Emin/Emax 1=circular): enter 1 for a circular polarization - otherwise
enter the ratio Emin/Emax.
