The life of Algerian families used to have

its charm. They used to do many activities
together. They used to work in agriculture and eat
what they harvest. They used to wear the
traditional clothes like el hayek, caftan and el holi.
Moreover, the traditional meals like couscous,
mhajeb, chorba …ect were the main dishes in
each house. Eating them together when the father
came home was not negotiable. After dining, they
used to sit together, have tea and watch respectful
films and cartoon.
Nowadays everything has changed. They
rarely eat traditional food because they are busy;
they work at offices, industries, companies…ect.
So, they keep eating fast food like pizza, burger,
chawarma. They are addictive to their smart
phones, chatting and playing games. They sit
together but barely talk. TV and family time is no
longer preferable as they like watching youtube
series and clips.
The Algerian people are going to change
their lifestyle into more modern and digital world.

Who is Ali Clay?
Is he an innate Muslim?
Where is he from?

Cassius Marcellus Clay

Mohamed Ali Clay (1942-2016) is an American boxing champion whose name was Cassius Clay before
he converted to Islam in the early 1960s. Although Ali Clay was combating his opponents violently, he was
fighting racism peacefully. Though he flied like a butterfly, Ali Clay stung like a bee.

Despite the fact that Ali Clay defeated 37 of his opponents by a knockout, he refused to join the US
military forces because of the war against Vietnam in 1967. He claimed that Islam prohibits killing innocent
people. He also stated:  “Why should they ask me to put on a uniform and go ten thousand miles from home
and drop bombs and bullets on brown people in Vietnam while so-called Negro people in Louisville are
treated like dogs and denied simple human rights?”

The heavyweight boxing champion had a desire. He wanted equality and justice for him and his family
and all blacks and muslims. He devoted himself to defending the human rights and helping people. He
passed away in June 2016 after struggling with Parkinson's disease.

As you read

1 Skim through the text below and check your answers for task 3 in “before you read”.

Earth gives us everything we need for living but the humanity is under threat of extinction if we do not
start taking better care for the environment and living more sustainable.

One of the most effective ways to preserve the nature is recycling. It is very important because it
reduces the negative impact of waste on the ecosystem. Also, when we recycle, used materials are converted
into new products which reduce the need of consuming natural resources. On the other hand, if we use
materials that are not recycled, we will face scarcity of resources because new products are made by
extracting fresh, raw material from the Earth. Thus, Recycling helps to conserve important raw materials and
protects natural habitats for the future. In addition to that, Using recycled materials in the manufacturing
process uses considerably less energy than that required for producing new products from raw materials.

By : MENAGGUER MAMMA

Every action that contributes to better sustainability is helpful no matter how unimportant it may seem.
Apparently, recycling can help us to rescue the planet as it guarantees that the present and the future
generations meet their needs and live more sustainable.
