Solving Routine or Non-Routine Problems Involving Division

This activity will measure your previous knowledge of the lesson on division
of fractions and whole numbers.

Activity 1.1 One-Step Routine Word Problem

Directions: Read and analyze the following word problem.
Marita is making placemats for her mother. How many placemats can she
cut from 4 meters of linen cloth if each placemat measures 2/5 meters?

a. What is asked in the problem?

b. What are the given facts?
c. What operation to be used?
d. What is the number sentence?
e. What is the complete answer?

Activity 1.2 Two-Step Routine Word Problem

Directions: Read and analyze the following word problem.
Rashed have 4 pieces of woods that are 3/4 of a foot in length. He needs to
cut pieces that are 1/6 of a foot long. How many pieces can Rashed cut?

a. What is asked in the problem?

b. What are the given facts?
c. What is the hidden question?
d. What are the operations to be used?
e. What is the number sentence?
f. What is the complete answer?

Activity 1.3 Non-Routine Word Problem

Directions: Read and analyze the following word problem.

1/3 of Ali’s money is equal to 1/2 of Basit’s money. How much each they
have if the sum of their money is ₱20

Guided Question
Directions: Answer the following questions.
1. What is the difference between Routine and Non-Routine word problems?
_______________________________________________________________________
2. How do we analyze word problems?
_______________________________________________________________________
3. What steps do we follow in solving word problems?
_______________________________________________________________________
4. What strategies can you think of to solve word problems easily and
correctly?
________________________________________________________________________

1. Difference Between Routine and Non-Routine Word Problem

Routine Word Problem - problem solving involves using at least one of

the four arithmetic operations and/or ratio to solve problems that are
practical in nature.

Non-Routine Word Problem - It requires some degree of creativity or

originality. Typically, it doesn’t have an immediately apparent strategy for
solving them. Often times, these problems can be solved in multiple ways
and with a variety of strategies.
2. Solving One-Step Routine Word Problem
Marita is making placemats for her mother. How many placemats can she
cut from 4 meters of linen cloth if each placemat measures 2/5 meters?

a. What is asked in the problem? Number of placemats can be made.

b. What are the given facts? 4 meters, 2/5 meters
c. What operation to be used? Multiplication
d. What is the number sentence? 4 x 2/5 = N
e. What is the complete answer? 4/1 x 2/5 = 8/5 or 1 3/5

3. Solving Two-Step Routine Word Problem

Rashed have 4 pieces of woods that are 3/4 of a foot in length. He needs to
cut pieces that are 1/6 of a foot long. How many pieces can Rashed cut?
a. What is asked in the problem? The amount she saves.
b. What are the given facts? ₱40, 3/5
c. What is the hidden question? The amount she spent for snacks.
d. What are the operations to be used? Multiplication and Subtraction
e. What is the number sentence? ₱40 – (3/5 X ₱40) = N
f. What is the complete answer? Solution: ₱40 – (3/5 x ₱40) = N
₱40 – (₱120/5) = N
₱40 – ₱24 = ₱16
3. Solving Non-Routine Word Problem
1/3 of Ali’s money is equal to 1/2 of Basit’s money. How much each they
have if the sum of their money is ₱20?
a. What is asked in the problem? The amount of money each they have.
b. What are the given facts? 1/3, 1/2, ₱20.
c. What are the operations to be used?
Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction
d. What is the complete answer?
Let A = Ali’s Money
B = Basit’s Money

Number Sentence:
1/3 A = ½ B

A + B = ₱20

Solution:
Transposition Substitution
1/3 A = ½ B A + B = ₱20 A = ₱20 – ₱8
A = 3/1 x ½ B 3/2 B + B = ₱20 A = ₱12
A = 3/2 B (3B+2B)/2 = ₱20
5B/2 = ₱20
5B = ₱20 x 2
B = ₱40/5
B = ₱8
What’s More!

Directions: Read and analyze the following word problem.

4 3
1. Jose has 4 5 hectares of farmland. He wants to subdivide it into 8 hectares
to be planted with different crops. Into how many parts can he divide his
farmland?
2. Alma and her classmate are making graduation ribbons. How many 9/10
dm ribbons long can be made from a spool of 20 ¾ dm long?
3. A garden is 3 3/8 meters by 5 ½. It is to be enclosed by 6 strands of barbed
wire. How many meters of barbed wire is needed?
4. There are 19 boys in Section 1 and 23 boys in Section 2. If 1/3 of them are
boy scouts, how many boy scouts are there in all?
5. A carpenter needs 30 three-legged and four-legged stools. He used 103 legs
in all. How many of each kind of stools did he make?

Let’s Evaluate!

Directions: Read and analyze the following word problem.

1. If each of 7 cakes is cut into eighth. How many pieces will there be?
2. Mrs. Salima bought a loaf of bread measures 8 inches long for breakfast.
How many slices can she make if each slice measures 1/8 inches long?
3. If the quotient of 8/13 and 2 is subtracted from the product of ¼ and 8/15,
what is the difference?
4. Jason spent ½ of his money for paper and 1/3 of it for pencils. How much
money did he start with if he had P15 left?
5. A farmer has 38 chickens and goats. Tom counted 92 legs in all? How
many chickens and goats does a farmer have?
