USING MODALS

LET US KNOW

Now we realized that the modal verbs in the English grammar play a
significant role in the way we write and speak the language. And we will learn
more….

But before that, let us analyze…

What do these signs mean?

LET US REVIEW

You are improving. Since we have started, you recall all about
modal verbs of permission. Previously, you also learned the modal
verbs of prohibition.

As we focus on the modals, you have learned how to use those tinny
tiny words that seem the same but now we discovered that they have specific
usage.

We have discussed the modal verbs of permission and obligation and

for this time, we are going to focus on the modal verbs of prohibition.

But let us see how sharp you are!

On your paper, copy the modal verbs used in the sentences, and write
if they are modal of permission or modal of obligation.

_______________1. May I take photographs inside the museum?

_______________2. Dindo, you should call your mother more often.

_______________3. I have to finish this project on time.

_______________4. You can bring your pet in the mall.

_______________5. You must listen to the speaker attentively.

LET US STUDY

If the modal of permission tells us what we are allowed to do, the modal
verb of prohibition does not allow us to say or do something to someone.

Modals of Prohibition say what you are not allowed to say or do.

The two most common modal verbs of prohibition are can’t and
mustn’t.

3
Can’t tells us that something is against the rules.

Mustn’t is usually used when the obligation comes from the person who
is speaking.

Read the sentences below.

Can’t Mustn’t
You can’t park here, sir. You mustn’t yawn when the pastor
is preaching.
He can’t be late for the meeting. I mustn’t play music when my
mother is speaking.
I can’t cross the border. She mustn’t wear a hat inside the
church.

LET US PRACTICE

Directions: Read the following sentences. Use the correct modal of prohibition
in each of the sentences. Write your answers on your paper.

1. ________________ I stay with the group?

2. You _______________ park here, ma’am. The parking lot is full.

3. You _______________ wear shirts in the pool.

4. You _______________ use Mandela’s speech to inspire the youth.

5. You _______________ make noise while the session is ongoing.

4
LET US REMEMBER

Directions: Write three (3) sentences for each column using can’t and
mustn’t. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper.

CAN’T MUSTN’T

1. 1.

2. 2.

3. 3.

LET US APPRECIATE

So many things could have been avoided if only we knew it is not

allowed. That is the beauty of the modal verb of prohibition because it tells us
that there are things we are restricted from saying or doing.

These modal verbs help us to understand the difference between can’t

and mustn’t both in writing and speaking.

Directions: Write five (5) things that you can’t do alone. Write also five (5)
things that you mustn’t do at your home. Use your paper in answering.

Things I can’t do alone… Things I mustn’t do at home…
