Cells Test #1 Study Guide: Your Test Is: A Day: Tuesday 9/14, B Day: Wednesday 9/15
Know that structure is the way something is made and that function is the
job something performs.
Know the cell theory:
1. Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in living things
2. All living things are made of cells
3. Cells are produced from other cells
Know about the different scientists whose discoveries led to the cell theory
and the disproving of spontaneous generation (ex: Virchow, Hooke,
Shleiden, Schwann, etc)
Know that spontaneous generation (the theory that living things and cells
can be reproduced from non-living things) was disproved by the cell theory.
Know the difference between a prokaryotic cell (no nucleus) and a
eukaryotic cell (nucleus and membrane bound organelles)
Know that we can study cells because of the invention of the microscope
Know the difference between living and non-living things: living things
include- plants, animals, bacteria. Non-living things include- rocks, soil,
sunlight, air
Know that cells are involved in Response/Sensitivity to Stimuli, Adaptability,
Reproduction, Energy Use, Homeostasis, Organization, Growth and
Development (RAREHOG).
Know that all living things are made of cells, contain similar chemicals, use
energy and nutrition, grow and develop, respond to their surroundings, and
reproduce.
Know the levels of organization in organisms: atom, molecule,
macromolecule, organelle, cell, tissue, organ, organ system, organism. (we
will stop after organism for this test)
Know the parts of the microscope and their functions.
Know that an independent variable is the part of an experiment being
changed and tested on purpose while the dependent variable is the change
that is the result of the experiment. The control or constant variable stays
the same.
Know that the steps to the scientific method are: problem, background
information, hypothesis, experiment, collect data, analyze data, and
conclusions.
Know that a hypothesis is an educated guess.
Extra tips:
*Study ALL your notes, doodle notes, flow charts, and handouts, in your
notebook.
*Study any handout or old quizzes I have given you on Characteristics of Living
Things, Cell Theory, and Levels of Organization.
