Biochemistry Virtual Laboratory Experiment: Carbohydrates

This virtual biochemistry laboratory experiment examines carbohydrates. Students will identify reducing and non-reducing sugars based on their reactivity using several tests (Solubility, Molisch's, Fehling's, Benedict's, Iodine, and Tollen's). The objectives are to identify the sugars from each experiment and demonstrate knowledge of laboratory procedures. Students will perform the virtual tests in groups but complete individual worksheets, taking notes and screenshots of results.

BIOCHEMISTRY VIRTUAL LABORATORY EXPERIMENT

CARBOHYDRATES
Carbohydrates are most abundant organic compounds found in living organisms and are
composed of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Carbohydrates act as the primary source to provide
energy for functioning of living organisms. These are called carbohydrates because they can be
considered as hydrates of carbon. Most of them have the general formula Cx(H2O)y.
Generally carbohydrates are defined as polyhydroxy aldehydes or polyhydroxy ketones or the
compounds which produces such products on hydrolysis. We will try to identify the types of
sugars based on their reactivity; Reducing or Non-reducing sugars.

Objectives:
at the end of the lesson, the students would be able to:

a) Identify the respective sugars based on the results of each experiment

b) Demonstrate knowledge during laboratory experiment in following procedures required
to obtain the necessary results

This Virtual Lab Activity is by group,

however the Laboratory worksheet will be
done individually. But you can share your
answers with your fellow group mates, then
collaborate, brainstorm and analyse each
answers (It’s different from copying each
answers).

1. Go to your respective groups, open

your web browser using your phone
or desktop/laptop and proceed to
this link:
http://amrita.olabs.edu.in/?sub=73&brch=8&sim=209&cnt=4
2. On each Set of Tests, click the HELP tab on the top-right of your screen for you to have a
guide in performing the Virtual laboratory.
3. There are 6 Tests you need to perform and observe the results as a group: SOLUBILITY
TEST, MOLISCH’s TEST, FEHLING’s TEST, BENEDICT’s TEST, IODINE TEST and TOLLEN’s
TEST.
4. TAKE NOTE! Every after tests, try to take note your observations and try to screenshot
your screen/take a picture of each results for your group’s reference.
Your teacher will discuss the results of each tests
