CAT-1 Sample Paper-1

1. The document contains a continuous assessment test for a modern physics course with 7 multiple choice and descriptive questions. It provides relevant physical constants and concepts needed to answer the questions. 2. The test contains questions that assess understanding of concepts like the ultraviolet catastrophe, tunneling effect, matter waves, carbon nanotubes, photon wavelength scattering, Schrodinger equation, Davisson-Germer experiment, Moore's law, Wien's displacement law, uncertainty principle, and more. 3. Students are asked to derive equations, describe experiments, explain physical phenomena, and apply concepts to theoretical or real-world examples over the course of the test.

Answer all questions

1. Explain “ultraviolet catastrophe” in context with the blackbody radiation. How

Planck’s radiation theory could solve the problem? (2+3)

2. How the concept of tunneling effect has been exploited in realizing the scanning
tunneling microscope? (5)(3+2)

3. What are matter waves? Prove that the velocity of matter wave is greater than the (5)
velocity of light.

4. What is carbon nanotube? Briefly explain the different types of carbon nanotubes. (2+3)

Part – B (3X10 = 30)

Answer all questions

5. Derive an expression for change in photon wavelength in terms of its

scattering angle and scattering object's mass. (10)

6. Derive Schrodinger time dependent and independent wave equations. What is

the ground state energy for an electron that is confined to a box of
width 0.2 nm ? (7+3)

7. i. Briefly describe the observations of Davisson- Germer experiment and how

did they explain it using de-Broglie hypothesis of matter wave.
ii. State Moore’s Law with graph. (7+3)

Answer all questions

1. State Wien’s displacement law. A star has a surface temperature of about

50000K. At what wavelength is the peak of its radiation? (2+3)

2. Define uncertainty principle. A photoelectron is moving with a kinetic energy of

30 eV. At a given point in space and time, its momentum can be measured with
8.00% uncertainty. What is the minimum uncertainty with which its position
could be measured? (2+3)

3. (i) Derive the time dependent Schrödinger equation. (ii) What is the physical
significance of ǀ(x,t)ǀ2, where(x,t) is the solution of Schrödinger equation. (4+1)

4. State Moore’s Law. In what way optical and magnetic properties of nanomaterial
are different from bulk material? (5)

Part – B (3X10 = 30)

Answer all questions

5. How Planck obtained the correct formula for the spectral distribution of
radiation from a black body? Derive the relevant formula. (2+8)
