COURSE GUIDE

CRIMIN 6

POLYGRAPHY (LIE DETECTION)

COLLEGE OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE

EDUCATION
SIR. JOHN BEL K. GALUMBA, R Crim
Instructor
Introduction
Welcome to the course Bachelor of Science in Criminology your gateway to
criminology profession, the subject polygraphy introduces you to many
concepts of fact-finding strategies especially in utilizing the polygraph
machine, it gives you an idea on how the early criminal investigators
overcome the need to establish the truth. As said, “Criminal investigation is
always a battle of truth and lies”, this subject discusses the background and
psychology of lying and the different techniques how to identify them,
historically, humans develop several ways to determine them, the concept
of trial by ordeal was developed during the early days since at that time
they strongly believed that, whatever physical challenge a man who has
clear conscience be put to will never be hurt or suffer since he will be given
divine protection by the almighty, meanwhile, those that are lying will be
smitten by the divine protector and will suffer pain and punishments. This
concepts latter was left behind after the positivist criminologist bunked the
idea of spiritualism and demonism as the reason for the existence of
criminality, with the development, many scientific procedures where applied
in the field of criminology as well as in the field of criminal investigation.
They become more critical in understanding the nature of man. In the field
of lie detection, many instrument were developed, one of those is the
polygraph machine, this machine was not invented as a whole, rather it is
the machine that was developed from the different machine that aims to
record the different physiological responses of man when lying. Polygraph
has four major components, these components individually record the
responses, which will then be interpreted as a whole to determine whether
a person is telling the truth or otherwise. The subject polygraphy is indeed
one of the interesting subjects in criminalistics, it is by nature that man will
always seek the truth behind every story. With that, I welcome you once
again and let us all have fun learning!

TEACHER

Hi, I’m JOHN BEL K. GALUMBA, I will be handling this subject, it

has been my interest to continuously unravel the truth behind the reason
why humans turn into the path of criminality, I studied Bachelor of Science
in Criminology as I was fascinated by the fact that I would be closer to
understanding the human nature. Criminality, as you see, affects not only a
selected group of the society, everyone is at equal risk of being a victim,
being able to know what makes you the target of a crime would be very
much helpful in surviving in this era that we currently live. Criminality is a
sensitive issue that most of the time not being discussed openly, many
from our society believes that punishment is already enough to solve the
problem. But by carefully understanding the existence of this problem
makes me realized that there is more than that, criminals have a galactic
wide reason to commit a crime. With these, it would be my very much
honor if you would join me in this conquest, not many would spend time
understanding the reason behind this matter.

With the current situation that we are, regular classes are not to be
expected, most of the time, I will be conducting online lecture in order to
substantiate the essence of learning through face to face meeting,
however, rest assured that the quality of education you will receive will be
at par or more than what you expect to receive in a conventional way of
learning.

Outside this portal, you may contact me on my

email johnbelkgalumba@gmail.com.
ONLINE LEARNER
As a student, I expect you to reciprocate the efforts and interest I may show
to you in our topics and discussions, active and open learning is my
teaching desire, whatever comes into your mind that is relative to our
discussion, you are free to share or speak, I value knowledge more than
any other figures that may show your progress, I encourage you to be
critical on the issues we will be discussing. There is no wrong or right
opinion, with that in mind, let us be respectful of the ideas regardless if they
fit ours or not. As long as we keep in mind that we obey the school policies
and guidelines in these current learning set up that we adopted. With that,
thank you and happy learning.
Assignment packs
There will be a part of this portal where you can create your portfolio where
all your submissions shall be all condensed, I encourage everyone to be
time conscious in submitting your assignments, research, and other outputs
to avoid deductions or rejections of your outputs. However, if I may see that
your reason is valid, I may consider you but I will still be applying deduction
of points due to late submissions. At the end of the semester, I will be
checking your portfolio individually, lack of assignments, reports, and
others may result in an incomplete grade or fail.
