5 FACTORS
OF INTERNAL
FENG SHUI

Previously, we covered plotting the Flying Stars Chart and superimposing it over
your floor plan. However, the Flying Stars alone is not sufficient in determining the
effects of the Qi on the occupants. They must be combined with the internal factors
of the house to create a more detailed report on the Qi’s influence on the home’s
occupants.

When talking about internal Feng Shui forms, we will generally focus on the five key
internal Feng Shui factors. These are the stove, bed, main door, study room and
balcony. Each factor governs different outcomes and aspects that will influence the
well-being of the house’s occupants.

5 FACTORS
OF INTERNAL
FENG SHUI

Definition: The door most used when entering or exiting the property. It doesn’t
matter if it is the door at the back of the house, or if the door is smaller
compared to the rest, if it’s the most used door when entering or exiting
the property then it is the main door.

The main door is the Qi or energy mouth that governs the source of energy for the
entire house. If the Flying Stars in the sector containing the main door is good, the
occupants of the house will be able to receive positive energy from that sector every
time the main door is used.

If the Flying Stars at the main door is not positive or timely, what should the
occupants do? They can use another door in a sector which contains positive Flying
Stars to enter or exit the house more frequently, turning that door into the main door
and reaping the benefits.

MAIN DOOR

Ground Floor

The picture above shows a floor plan of a house. Can you see that the main door
opens straight into a screen or a wall? In that case, the house is experiencing a Qi
blockage, as the Qi has not enough space to gather before entering the house. Is this
good or bad?

It depends. If the sector has beneficial Flying Stars resulting in good Qi, this is bad
because the good Qi is unable to flow throughout the house. On the other hand, if the
sector has negative Flying Stars, the Qi blockage is good because it prevents the bad
Qi from influencing the people in the house.

Thus, for people who are unable to change their main door because it is affected by
negative Flying Stars, the next best thing to do would be to put a screen in front so
that the Qi cannot fully affect the occupants inside.

Other Negative Forms Affecting the Main Door

Besides Qi blockage, there are numerous

other forms which you need to watch
out for when analyzing the main door.

Here’s what you should do when checking for external forms:

1. Stand at your main door

4

Module 4 Eat, Sleep, Feng Shui

2. Look outwards

That’s all! There’s no need for special equipment or standing on a chair or anything
like that. Simply stand at the main door and look out! You’ll be looking for any
negative form which you can see from that position.

Keep it logical, it is only negative if it’s close enough to your main door. A tree a mile
away should not be a cause of concern.

External negative forms:

1. Lamp post, tree or pillar directly in 2. Main door is very dark or shadowed by
front of the main door. a lot of trees.

3. Main door faces an alley, T-junction, 4. Parallel running drain in front of the
sharp edge like a roof, or a narrow gap main door
between houses.

Negative forms are not limited to outside your house though. You would also need to
stand at the main door and look inwards.

Internal negative forms:

1. Main door faces wall corner, pillar, 2. A straight line from the main door to
staircase or is right in front of another the back door.
room door.

3. Beam on top of the main door. 4. Interior is dark and gloomy.

When examining the main door, it is crucial to examine for all these forms while
checking the Flying Stars. After all, if the external or internal forms do not support
the main door, the Qi is already negatively affected, regardless of the Flying Stars
arrangement.

5 FACTORS
OF INTERNAL
FENG SHUI

In Feng Shui, the bed represents both rest and relationship, as it’s the place where
people sleep, sometimes with their loved ones. If the bedroom has a positive
configuration of Flying Stars, the sleeping person will be able to absorb positive
energy, resulting in improved communications, relationships, and health. On the
other hand, a bedroom with negative Qi leads to both exhaustion and communication
issues.

If a family has any problems relating to relationships, communications, exhaustion, or

sleep issues, the bedroom is the best place to check. If a bedroom contains a negative
Flying Star configuration, the best way to mitigate the effect is to leave the room
unused, and find another bedroom to sleep in. If that’s not possible, there are also
other ways to mitigate the effect, one of which is known as the ‘Small Tai Chi’
technique.

8

Module 4 Eat, Sleep, Feng Shui

Small Tai Chi

It is also possible to divide the bedroom itself into 9 mini-quadrants, which you then
apply the Flying Stars to. Once that’s done, just locate your bed in the sector with the
best Flying Stars while making sure that it doesn’t trigger any negative form. This will
help boost the positive effect if the bedroom is in a positive Qi sector or help mitigate
the effect of a negative Flying Star arrangement.

Other Forms Affecting the Bed

For each key internal factor in Feng Shui,

there will be other forms affecting the
quality of the Qi in the sector. The bed is
no exception.

Listed below are a number of forms which you need to check to ensure that the
bedroom is able to activate its positive Qi.

1. The headboard of the bed is positioned against a solid wall.

2. There are no beams or anything hanging above the bed.
3. The bed should be under a straight ceiling, not a slanted one.
4. Make sure that any mirror in the room is not able to reflect sunlight onto the bed.
5. The end of the bed should not be pointing at a door.
6. Having an overly cluttered bedroom.

Unlike the main door, most of these forms are easy to fix. The bed can be moved,
objects can be repositioned, mess can be cleaned, and sections of your room can be
cordoned off to make square or rectangle rooms.

11

Module 4 Eat, Sleep, Feng Shui

However, the bedroom can only be affected by the Qi coming into the property. If
your main door has a Qi blockage and there are no windows in the room to let in the
energy, the best Flying Star arrangement in the bedroom won’t matter. If you still
can’t obtain positive results despite doing everything you possibly could for your
bedroom, the problem might be elsewhere, like your main door.

3. The Stove & Kitchen

MAIN DOOR

BED STUDY ROOM

STOVE BALCONY

5 FACTORS
OF INTERNAL
FENG SHUI

Another important internal Feng Shui factor is the stove. In most cases, the stove and
the kitchen are interchangeable, however, some homes have two kitchens. In that
case, focus on the kitchen where the stove is located, and apply all of the following to
that kitchen.

The stove represents health. If the stove is located in a place filled with positive Qi, the
food cooked will also be healthy and nutritious. On the other hand, a kitchen in a
sector with negative Qi could result in a lack of health and well-being among family
members.

What should you do if the kitchen is located in a sector with a negative Flying Star
combination? You can reuse the ‘Small Tai Chi’ technique. Divide the kitchen into 9
sectors, then locate the stove in one of those sectors with a positive Flying Star
arrangement. This will help mitigate the effects of the negative Qi.

13

Module 4 Eat, Sleep, Feng Shui

NOTE:

For families who normally eat outside or bring food back instead of cooking, this
sector is not as important for you. After all, if the stove is not being used, any
good or bad energies affecting the stove won’t be able to transmit to the family.

Other Forms Affecting the Stove

The kitchen contains both the Water

Element (the sink) and the Fire Element
(the stove).

These 2 elements clash against each

other, so care must be taken to ensure
they are kept separate.

Therefore, ensure that the sink and the stove are not directly next to each other or facing
each other directly.

14

Module 4 Eat, Sleep, Feng Shui

Sometimes, moving the stove is not an option. If that’s the case, position an actual plant
between the two. The Water Element will be used in producing the Wood Element from
the plant, which in turn would produce the Fire Element for the stove. Although not a
perfect solution, it would still be of aid in reducing ill-effects generated by the clashing
elements.

The stove should also be kept stable, so it must be placed against a wall. Although some
kitchens implement the stove on an island in the middle of the room, this is not
recommended. Similarly, ensure that the stove does not face a corner edge or a doorway.

NOTE:

Although the fridge is cold, it is not associated with the Water Element. Don’t
be concerned if the stove is directly next to or facing the fridge.

5 FACTORS
OF INTERNAL
FENG SHUI

Although the study room is not one of the big three vital internal factors according to
the Traditional Feng Shui classics, it nevertheless plays an important role in the house
simply because of lifestyle changes. It is now common for people to work from home
or bring work back to finish or further develop. In that case, the study room is like a
person’s secondary office, and the type of Qi in that room will affect the person’s
livelihood and career.

Sometimes, study rooms are used as libraries by children, or as places where they can
do their homework or study. In that case, positive Qi will help them absorb more
knowledge and progress better in their studies and results. On the other hand,
negative Qi could lead to loss of focus and worse examination results.

16

Module 4 Eat, Sleep, Feng Shui

Some families don’t have a study room, but instead do their work or studying from
the desk in their bedrooms. In that case, treat the room the desk is in as the study
room as well. A room can pull double duty in acting like a bedroom and a study room.
However, this might create a problem when using the ‘Small Tai Chi’ technique as
there might not be enough positive places in a room to place both the work desk and
the bed.

Of course, if you are a single person who never works from home, then you don’t need
to pay too much attention to your study room! Be logical here, internal factors are
only important if it is used regularly. If you only use your work desk once per year to
do your taxes, you shouldn’t be worried whether it is affected by positive or negative
Qi.

Module 4 Eat, Sleep, Feng Shui

Other Forms Affecting the Study Room

For study rooms, you generally want

to sit with a solid backing at your
back and the door in front of you.

If there’s a window behind you, but there’s a tree or other solid objects in front of the
window, it is also considered a solid backing.

 
You should also not put the work desk directly under a beam, a slanted ceiling or a
staircase. This suppresses the energies, leading to negative Qi. Finally, make sure that the
door does not directly face your back.

5 FACTORS
OF INTERNAL
FENG SHUI

In a high-rise building, such as an apartment or condominium, your unit entrance

faces a corridor, a lift, or even another unit. In that case, how does Qi enter your unit?
It is through the balcony. The balcony acts like the main door, allowing the energies to
flow into and disperse throughout your unit.

A good balcony should generally be facing an open area. If you look out and all you see
is another building’s wall, the Qi is blocked from entering your unit. On the other
hand, if your balcony is in a sector with good Flying Stars and has a good view, your
unit will be able to receive positive Qi.

Module 4 Eat, Sleep, Feng Shui

Other Forms Affecting the Balcony

As for the forms affecting a balcony, just apply all the theories you have learned about
the main door to the balcony as well.

Make sure the balcony is spacious and clean while facing a nice open area that allows
the flow of positive Qi into your unit.

NOTE:

For landed properties, the balcony is not important. This section is mainly
for high-rise buildings.

There are many combinations of Flying Stars, each with their own effects. However,
for a basic overview, just remember that Stars #1, #4, #6, #8 and #9 are generally
positive, while Stars #2, #3, #5, and #7 are generally negative.

For now, just check your main internal Feng Shui factors and see which Stars they are
affected by. If it’s a positive Star, good! If it’s negative though, don’t worry. Negative
Stars by their own are not really harmful, they are only harmful if they are
strengthened by negative forms present in that internal factor.

Module 4 Eat, Sleep, Feng Shui

If you want to do something after this lesson, just take a look at your bedroom, kitchen,
study room, main door and balcony. Try to see whether they are affected by any negative
internal forms. If they are, then do your best to perform the necessary adjustments to
ensure that they are no longer affected by the negative forms.

For the next lesson, you’ll be learning about Qi Mapping. Stay tuned!

NOTE:

Further elaboration on the effects of the Flying Star combinations will come in a
later module titled ‘When Stars Meet, Combine & Collide’.
