CALCULATION OF DISCHARGE BY DICKEN'S FORMULA

Q =C*M^0.75

Where,

Q =Discharge in Cumec

M =Catchment area in sq. km.

C =11-14 where annual rainfall is between 60-120cm.

=14-19 where annual rainfall is more than 120cm.
=22 in western Ghats
For this case,

M = 261.226 sq.km.

C = 14

Q = 909.684 Cumec

Dicharge by Dicken formula = 909.684 cumec

CALCULATION OF DISCHARGE BY RATIONAL FORMULA

Q= 0.028*P*f*A*Ic
Where,

Q= Discharge in Cumec

P= Co-efficient of run -off for the catchment characteristics = 0.90

f= Co-efficient to account for the area of catchment = 0.630

A= Area of catchment in hectares = 26122.60

Io= Critical intensity of hourly rainfall experienced in the region

in cm. (Considering the Khalari Area) = 6.32

L= The distance from the critical point to the structure in km. = 34.605

H= The fall in level from critical point to the structure in m = 390

tc= The concentration time in hours = [0.87*(L^3)/H)^0.385 = 5.71

For this case,
L H tc Io Ic P f A Q
km m hr cm/hr hectare cumec
34.605 390.00 5.71 6.32 1.88 0.9 0.63 26122.6 780.89

(a) At 300 m U/S : 699.949 Cumec
(b) At Bridge Site : 766.297 Cumec
(c) At 300 m D/S : 842.148 Cumec

As per IRC SP 13-2004 Cl.6.2.1

Calculation of Linear Waterway

Linear waterway (Lacy) 4.5 x Q1/2 W = 154.75 m
Here Lacy's Formula for calculating Linear Waterway is not applied as the soil in bed is Quasi Alluvial and this method is preferred in Alluvial Soil

As per Clause No. 8.5 of IRC:SP:13-2004, when the river is in rigid boundary like rock or solid soil that can not be affected by the prevailing current,
then the effective linear waterway of the bridge should be made equal to the actual surface width of the waterway.
Effective linear waterway Provided = 72.00 m
Here 72 meter of Effective linear waterway is proposed, considering the total length of the cross section also the existing bridge is of 72.0 m in
Length and present condition of the Existing bridge is also fine having no presence of scouring in the foundations. Therefore we adopted a similar
span length of the bridge considering the betterment in service life & safety of the bridge. Also keeping in mind the fall in level from critical point to
the structure is comaparatively more approx 350-400m.
Therefore, bridge having effective linear waterway of 72m length has been provided with 2 x 36 m span arrangement.

CALCULATION OF SCOUR DEPTH

Design discharge adopted for this Bridge = 909.684 cumec

As per clause 703.1.1 of I.R.C:78-2000 design discharge for design of foundation is to be increased by 30%

i.e.Design Discharge = 1182.59 cumec

Effective Linear Waterway = 72.00 m

As per clause 703.2.2 of I.R.C:78-2000

Db2 1/3
Mean Scour Depth = 1.34
K
sf

Db (Discharge per m width) = 16.425 Cumec/m

As per Clause 703.2.2 of IRC:78-2000

where Ksf = 1.76√ dm
From soil investigation report

dm = 0.725 mm (Type of Bed Material at Bridge site is Silty Coarse Sand which is
observed from soil report, hence as per Table 7.1 IRC SP-13-2004)
Ksf = 1.50

Scour Depth = 7.566 m (Clause 703.2 IRC SP-13-2004)

MAXIMUM SCOUR DEPTH
As Per Clause 10.4 ;Rule(2) of SP-13:2004
Maximum Scour Depth for Pier = 2 x Normal Scour Depth
= 2 x 7.566 m
= 15.13 m

Maximum Scour Depth for ABUTMENT = 1.27 X Normal Scour Depth

= 1.27 x 7.566 m
= 9.61 m
CALCULATION OF AFFLUX
As per Moles Worth Formula 2
V2 + 0.015 x A - 1
Afflux h = 17.88 a

Where V = Velocity of Flow at bridge site = 3.46 m/sec

A = Unobstructed cross sectional area at bridge site = 221.38 m2

a = Actual area of flow under the bridge = 214.08 m2

Afflux:h = 0.047 m

CALCULATION OF FORMATION LEVEL

R.L. of H.F.L. at bridge site= 545.253 m
Afflux = 0.047 m
Clearance= 1.200 m
Depth of Super Structure (RCC Girder + Deck Slab) = 2.725 m
Wearing coarse= 0.075 m
CALCULATED FORMATION LEVEL= 549.300 m

PROVIDED FORMATION LEVEL 549.300 M

Fixation of levels
Formation Level Provided = 549.300 M
Ground Level for Abutments = 537.516 M
Foundation Level for Abutments = 533.016 M
As per Soil Report Boulder is being found on the bed of the river upto the depth of 3 m after that soft rock is found, hence for the Foundation of
Abutments 3 m with 1.5 m of rock embedment depth is considered.
.
Ground Level for Pier = 536.716 M
Foundation Level for Pier = 532.216 M
As per Soil Report Boulder is being found on the bed of the river upto the depth of 3 m after that soft rock is found, hence for the Foundation of
Pier 3 m with 1.5 m of rock embedment depth is considered.
Rock Level for Abutment = 534.516 M
Rock Level for Pier = 533.716 M
Rock Level for Abutment Locations is found at - 534.516m and at Pier Locations it is found at - 533.716m
Note:- If Rock level is different at site then foundation level is refixed
