Solve the following Problem:

1. A horizontal straight pipe gradually reduces in diameter from 300 mm to 150 mm. If, at the
larger end, the gage pressure is 275 kpa and the velocity is 3 m/s,what is the total longitudinal
thrust exerted on the pipe? Neglect friction. Note the larger end is at point 1.

2. What should be the width (b) and depth of flow (y) of a rectangular planed timber flume of best
hydraulic cross-section to carry 2.40 m³/ s with a velocity of 1.5 m / s. What grade should the
flume have? What percentage less flow would this flume carry if y = 0.6 m and b = 2.70 m? Use n
= 0.012 Note: % less flow = ( Qa – Qb / Qa ) x 100
3. Determine the critical depth for best hydraulic cross-section of a trapezoidal channel that carries
a flow of 6.5 m³/ s. Note: For Best Hydraulic Cross-Section; T = 2 z where T – top width and z-side
length, and R = y/2.
4. What should be the slope of a planed-timber flume, rectangular in cross-section, to carry 0.80
m³/ s. If the width is 1.2 m and the depth of flow is 0.45 m. Is the flow sub-critical or super-
critical? Determine the critical depth and critical slope for the given discharge and width. Use n =
0.012
5. An earth canal is to carry 10.8 m³/ s at a mean velocity of 0.65 m /s. the side slopes are to be 2
horizontal to 1 vertical. The depth of water is to be one-fourth of the bottom width. Assuming
that the canal is to be kept in good condition, find the necessary slope. Use n = 0.0225
