Quality and Total Quality
Quality and Total Quality
1. Write a short essay explaining the difference between quality and total quality
approach?
Quality and total quality approach are connected but also have significant
differences. Quality is a standard for customer satisfaction and focuses on the
product's characteristics and features. Meanwhile, the total quality approach
takes into account the complete production process in order to produce a quality
product. It is a process for continually improving the quality of a product or
service in a way that benefits the organization.
2. Pick one (1) quality guru and describe his contribution in achieving total quality in the
work place.
Dr. Joseph M. Juran
Juran has been called the "Father of Quality," as well as a "Quality Guru" and "The
Man Who Taught Quality to the Japanese." The Juran trilogy of the three quality
processes: quality control, quality planning, and quality improvement is one of his
significant contributions. In the field of quality management, Joseph M. Juran has
made numerous contributions. To this day, his book, the Quality Control Handbook,
is regarded as a standard reference for quality engineers. He transformed the
Japanese quality management philosophy and actively worked to shape their
economy, helping them in becoming industry leaders. Dr. Juran was the first to
embed the human aspect of quality management, known as Total Quality
Management. The involvement of top management, the Pareto principle, identifying
the need for widespread training in quality, propagating the new definition of quality
as fitness for use, and the project-by-project approach towards quality improvement
are the ideas and concepts for which Juran is best known, and they are still widely
used today.
