SELF ASSESSMENT 1

Below is a definition of history by Zeus A. Salazar (1999). Examine it


carefully then answer the questions following the definition.

“Ang KASAYSAYAN ay SALAYSAY hinggil sa nakaraan o


nakalipas na may SAYSAY – kahulugan, katuturan, at kabuluhan – sa
SARILING LIPUNAN at KULTURA o kabuuang kinabibilangan. Ito ay
iniuulat gamit ang mga konsepto at kategorya ng sariling kultura.”

A. What does the author mean or imply by “Ang kasaysayan ay salaysay…


na may saysay sa sariling lipunan at kultura”?
The author wants to indicate that the history is all about past events
that have deep meaning and importance to our society. It is important
for us to know our history because through the history it can bring us
to our past, it always reminds us the past events that has deep impact
in our society that help to change the world. The history has special
meaning to our lives, it connects us through it. What we have no and
what we predict on the future of our society has an involvement to our
past.

B. The statement. “Ito (referring to kasaysayan) ay iniuulat gamit ang


mga konsepto at kategorya ng sariling kultura implies who should write
a people’s history. What issues would emerge from (1) a history of
people written and
interpreted by an “outsider” (a foreign Historian); and, (2) a history of
people analyzed and presented by an “insider” (a local historian)?

B.1 History written by an outsider

In my point of view, history written by an outsider can be


contradicted by history written by an insider. Not all information are
inappropriate because the history wrote by an outsider isn’t permanent
so it means that the history written by insider is not that accurate. In
conclusion, foreigner or an outsider who write history to a foreign
country can receive a negative feedback from the locals.
B.2 History written by an insider

The history written by an insider is obviously can give more


appropriate information about history because it is written by an
insider, it means the he/she is knowledgeable about their own country
and can find more reliable source to write history by his/her own hands
and knowledge. But on the other side I can say that history written by
an insider have also disadvantages because we can think that he/she
can write by his/her own with false claims, and can’t provide evidences
