Lesson 2 Language
I. Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
+ Understand and identify relative pronouns, distinguish defining and non-defining
relative clause
+ Pronounce correctly three –syllable adjectives and verbs in isolation and in context.
+ Use 3 words about digital devices in studying
II. Language contents and skills.
• Language contents: Vocabulary related to the topic New ways to learn , three –syllable
adjectives and verbs, defining and non-defining relative clauses with “who, that and whose”
• Skills:
- Reading: Understanding 3 words related to electronic devices
- Speaking: Pronouncing correctly three –syllable adjectives and verbs
- Listening: Identifying three –syllable adjectives and verbs
- Writing: Identifying and knowing how to use defining and non-defining relative clauses with
“who, that and whose”
III. Method: Intergrated, communicative approach.

10 minutes - 3. Grammar: Defining and non-defining relative


clauses
- T shows the definition of relative clause

“Relative clauses give information about someone or


something by defining or identifying the nouns that
precede them in the main clause.

They usually begin with the relative pronouns who,


which, that, whose

-T gives students 7 examples and lets students identify - Ss listen the questions
the relative pronouns and the rule to use those - Ss underline the relative
pronouns
-T gives the rule of using relative pronouns - Ss answer the questions
+ Relative pronoun introduce information about the individually.

- T helps students to distinguish defining relative clause
vs non-defining relative clause.
Example:
+ The man who came to visit us is a computer engineer
+ That man, who came to visit us, is a computer engineer

-T asks Ss “ If we omit the relative clause, are the - Ss listen and answer the
meaning of two sentence clear?” question individually
- T shows the defintion of 2 types of relative clause

“A defining relative clause gives detailed and necessary


information without which the sentence is incomplete. It
is not placed between commas”
“A non-defining relative clause gives extra information
without which the sentence is still complete. It is placed
between commas.

-T asks students if it is possible to use “THAT” in these - Ss listen and answer the
relative clause question individually

“Non-defining relative clauses cannot use the pronoun


‘that’ and sometimes we can omit the wh-pronoun or
that”
