INTRODUCTION
Running is one of the most fundamental
skills one can learn and apply in many popular
sports. Games that children play will also involve
running, and success in these games usually
entails being able to chase the opponent or avoid
being caught by them. One such game is
“Capture the flag”, which has a similar local
counterpart called “agawan base”, a game known to
most Filipino children. To capture the flag, first
the group is divided into two equal areas. Each
team’s flag will be placed in the opposing area.
The main objective of the game is for the team
members to bring the flag back to their area.
Members of the team will be tagged if they are in the opposing team’s area, and will be unable to play until
their team mates tag them and set them free.
DISCUSSION/LEARNING ACTIVITY
History of Running
Running is considered one of the oldest
sporting events in history. Winners in running events
have been recorded as early as the ancient Olympic
games (776 bc). Running tournaments in colleges and
military schools became popular in the 19th century
especially in England, US, throughout Europe. In the
1960’s, a boom in athletics saw champion runners
from Africa and the Caribbean, as well as other
developing countries, the 1896 Games of the
Olympiad help in Athens, Greece women’s events
only started in 1928 in Amsterdam. In the modern era,
running has become a popular activity for the young
and old people alike as an exercise that helps develop
endurance and at the same time helps with weight
management and reduces risk for cardiovascular-related diseases.

What is running?
Running is a method of terrestrial locomotion. The term running can refer to any variety of speeds raging from
jogging to sprinting.

Running has been described as the world’s most accessible sport.

Running can be in the form of racing not only for completion but also fitness, it can also, be used when training
for sports that have running or endurance components.

Different types of events


Track running

These can be both individual and relay events with athletes running specified distances on an oval track, which
can be:

Sprints - 100 meters, 200 and 400 meters.


Middle distance – 800 meters, 1000 meters, 1500 meters and a mile.
Track events can also incorporate hurdles.

Road running

These events take place on a measured course on an established road. The distances range from 5 kilometers to
half marathon (just over 13 miles) and a marathon (around 26 miles). Also for the super fit there is ultra running
which is an ultra marathon which is 72 miles plus!

Cross country running

Takes place over rough or open terrain. They may include running over grass, mud, woodlands, hills, flat
ground and through water.
GEARING UP FOR RUNNING
Running requires no equipment except for a pair of shoes.
They should preferably be
1. lightweight with ample cushioning and arch support if necessary to avoid
injury and discomfort during longer runs.

2. An allowance between the tip of the shoe and the end of your big toe is
desirable

3. Snug fitting socks should also be used to absorb sweat and to prevent blisters
from forming on the heel and toes.

4. Clothing should be light and breathable (allowing sweat to evaporate) and prevent
skin from chafing
5. Girls should wear a support bra if necessary.

Running is an excellent exercise that can be done to improve one’s health, particularly cardiovascular
fitness. Doing this exercise on a regular basis can help manage your weight as well as help keep your
cardiovascular system fit and healthy.

Fitness testing should be done at the start and end of the program to be able to monitor progress.
Wearing the proper gear is also important so the activity will be safe and enjoyable for the participants.

Assignment:
A. Make set of exercises for 1 minute before jogging/ running (Send online)
B. Wear proper running attire and jog around the available running space for about 5 to 10 minutes.
Increase the time to 15 minutes and to 20-30 minutes in the next sessions. You should be able to
appreciate running using the appropriate clothing and shoes. Record the time. Paste your documentation
below.

C. The next practice day, try to make another set of exercises, harder than the first one, try doing a
combination of 3-min walk/run cycles to complete the mile. Time is recorded. Increase the running time every
practice day until you can complete the test protocol without walking. In each session, time is recorded.
