RURAL EXODUS

Rural exodus is when people, especially young, leave the rural zones
and come to live in cities. It is a common phenomenon in developing
countries. In the Republic of Gabon, people move into big cities like Port-
Gentil and Libreville.

5 Rural exodus is caused by many factors.Young boys and girls come to

cities to look for jobs in industries. They also come to enjoy social facilities
like good roads, hospital, electricity, pipe borne and good schools. Some
come for adventure or discovery; others come to hide from village witchcraft.

Rural exodus creates problems in rural zones and urban centres. In

10 villages, there is depopulation. When young people leave their villages, only
the old are left, old people do not have enough strength to cultivate the land.
In consequence agricultural production reduces. In cities, where there is
overpopulation, jobs search and unemployment increase. Those who do not
have jobs become delinquents. Life in cities becomes hard: food prices are
15 high just like house rents

To combat rural exodus, the government must improve the quality of

life in villages. It should construct good roads, hospitals and schools, provide
electricity and drinkable water. To combat unemployment, industries should
be located in rural zones and agriculture encouraged. A campaign against rural
20 exodus should also be made in schools and the mass media.

PERSONAL OPINION
If I may give my opinion, I can say that this text is interesting because it deals with rural
exodus and gives some solutions to stop it. In fact, rural exodus causes the depopulation
of villages and increases delinquency in cities.
