OBJECTIVES
LET’S LEARN

𝑛
The symbol √𝑎𝑚 is called radical. A radical expression or a radical is an expression containing the
𝑛
symbol √ called radical sign. In the symbol √𝑎𝑚 , n is called the index or order which indicates the degree
3 4
of the radical such as square root √ , cube root √ and fourth root √ , an is called the radicand which is a
number or expression inside the radical symbol and m is the power or exponent of the radicand.

𝑚
𝑚 𝑛 𝑛
If is a rational number and a is a positive real number, them 𝑎 𝑛 = √𝑎𝑚 = ( √𝑎)m provided that
𝑛
𝑚
𝑛 𝑛
√𝑎𝑚 is a real number. The form ( √𝑎)m = 𝑎 𝑛 is called the principal nth root of am. Through this, we can write
expressions with rational exponents as radicals.

Example:
1 2
2 3 3 3
22 = √21 = √2 (3𝑎)3 = √(3𝑎)2 = √32 𝑎2 = √9𝑎2
𝑛
Note: we need to impose the condition that a > 0 in the definition √𝑎𝑚 for an even n because it will NOT
hold true if a < 0. If a is a negative real number and n is an even positive integer, then a has NO real nth root.

2
If a is a positive or negative real number and n is an odd positive integer, then there exists exactly
one real nth root of a, the sign of the root being the same as the sign of the number.
Examples:
3
√−8 = no real root √−8 = -2
4 5
√−32 = no real root √−32 = -2

Simplifying radical expressions particularly square root

The simplified form of a radical expression would require:

❖ NO radicand can be factored using a perfect square number.
❖ NO radicand contains a fraction.
❖ NO denominator contains a radical sign.

Simplify: √36

• 36 is a perfect square number and can be

√36 = √62 derived from 62.
• Since “square roots” and “exponent of 2 or
√36 = √62 squares” are opposite operations, then they will
cancel each other out.
√𝟑𝟔 = 6

Simplify: √18

• 18 is not a perfect square number, but it can be

√18 = √9 ● 2 factored using a perfect square number.
√18 = √9 ● √2 • Rewrite into separate factors.
• 9 is a perfect square number while 2 is not and
√18 = √32 ● √2 has no perfect square number factor
• Since “square roots” and “exponent of 2 or
√18 = 3 ● √2 squares” are opposite operations, then they will
cancel each other out.
√𝟏𝟖 =3√𝟐

Simplify: √75

• 75 is not a perfect square number, but it can be

√75 = √25 ● 3 factored using a perfect square number.
√75 = √25 ● √3 • Rewrite into separate factors.
• 25 is a perfect square number while 3 is not and
√75 = √52 ● √3 has no perfect square number factor
• Since “square roots” and “exponent of 2 or
√75 = 5 ● √3 squares” are opposite operations, then they will
cancel each other out.
√𝟕𝟓 =5√𝟑

3
Simplify: 10√20

• 20 is not a perfect square number, but it can be

10√20 = 10√4 ● 5
factored using a perfect square number.
10√20 = 10 ● √4 ● √5 • Rewrite into separate factors.
• 4 is a perfect square number while
10√20 = 10 ● √22 ● √5
• 5 is not and has no perfect square number factor
• Since “square roots” and “exponent of 2 or
10√20 = 10 ● 2 ● √5 squares” are opposite operations, then they will
cancel each other out.
𝟏𝟎√𝟐𝟎 = 20√𝟓

Simplify: √10

√𝟏𝟎 = √𝟏𝟎 • It can’t be simplified because 10 is not a perfect

square number and has no factor that is a
perfect square.

Directions: Simplify each radical expression.

1. √100 = ____________

2. √48 = ____________

3. √98 = ____________

4. 2√25 = ____________

Sum and Difference of radical expressions particularly square roots

Find the sum of 3√5 + 8√5

Observation:
3√5 + 8√5 • The index of each addends is the same.
• The radicand of each addends is the same.
• Simply add the coefficient of the radical of
3√5 + 8√5 = 11√5 each addends.
• Simplify your answer if possible.

Find the sum of √12 + √12

Observation:
√12 + √12 • The index of each addends is the same.
• The radicand of each addends is the same.
• Simply add the coefficient of the radical of
√12 + √12 = 2√12
each addends.
√12 + √12 = 2√(4)(3)
√12 + √12 = 2 ● √(4) ● √3
√12 + √12 = 2 ● √(22 ) ● √3 • Simplify your answer if possible.
√12 + √12 = 2 ● 2 ● √3
√12 + √12 = 4√3

4
Find the difference of 5√10 - √10 = 4√10

Observation:
• The index of minuend and subtrahend is the
5√10 - √10 same.
• The radicand of minuend and subtrahend is
the same.
• Simply subtract the coefficient of the
5√10 - √10 = 4√10 radicals.
• Simplify your answer if possible.

Find the difference of √7 - √11

Observation:
• The index of minuend and subtrahend is the
√7 - √11 same.
• BUT, the radicand of minuend and
subtrahend is not the same.
• It can’t be subtracted nor added because
√7 - √11 = √7 - √11
they have different radicands.
