Lesson 1. Simplifying Radical Expressions

You learned from the previous lesson how Laws of Radicals were derived. In
this lesson you will learn how to apply those laws in simplifying radicals.

From the previous lesson, Radical is an expression of the form √𝑎 denoting
the principal nth root of a. The positive integer n is the index, or order, of the radical
and the number a is the radicand. The index is omitted if n = 2.

The laws for radicals are obtained directly from the laws for exponents by

To simplify radicals, it is important to reduce the radical to its simplest form


through use of the following operations:

1. Removal of perfect nth powers from a radicand. Any radical of order n


should be simplified by removing all perfect nth powers from under the radical

2. Reduction of the index of the radical.

3. Rationalization of the denominator. Fractions may be removed from under


a radical sign by rationalizing the denominator. To rationalize the
denominator of a radical of order n, multiply the numerator and denominator
of the radicand by such a quantity as will make the denominator a perfect nth
power and then remove the denominator from under the radical sign.

A radical is said to be in simplest form if:


• all perfect nth powers have been removed from the radical
• the index of the radical is as small as possible
• no fractions are present in the radicand i.e. the denominator has been
rationalized.

Lesson 2: Operations on Radical Expressions

In this lesson, it will test you on how you can apply the previous concepts in
the operations of radicals, how to solve radical equations, how to solve real life
problems involving radicals. You will first perform operations of radical expressions.

expression that will help you perform the operations on radical expressions.

lesson, let us apply this knowledge in performing operations on radical expressions.
It is very important to know what is similar radicals and dissimilar radicals.
Radical expression with the same order and the same radicand is called similar
radicals while radicals with different indices and different radicands are called
dissimilar radicals. From the given definition try to answer the given activity.

Adding and Subtracting Radical Expressions

Note: To add or subtract radical expressions, see to it that given radical expressions
are similar radical expressions. You can only add or subtract similar radicals (radicals
with the same index and radicand). To add or subtract, add or subtract the coefficients
first then affix the common radical. And, to add or subtract dissimilar radicals you
need to simplify first the expression before adding or subtracting. Answer must be in
its simplest form.

Step 1: Simplify each radical.

Step 2: To add or subtract radicals, the indices and what is inside the radical (called
the radicand) must be exactly the same. If the indices and radicands are the
same, then add or subtract the terms in front of each like radical. If the indices
or radicands are not the same, then you cannot add or subtract the radicals.

Example 1. Simplify: 5√5 + 12√5 - 8√5

5√5 + 12√5 - 8√5

Multiplication of Radical Expressions

To multiply radical expression, you must apply the different laws of radical
and the different properties of multiplication like distributive property and special
products of polynomials. Rationalizing the denominator in this lesson is necessary
to simplify radical expression. Make sure that the denominator is not in radical form.

Note: In multiplying radical expressions, there are some things to remember:

1. There should be no factor in the radicand that has a power greater


than or equal to the index.
2. There should be no fractions in the denominator under the radical
sign.
3. There should be no radicals in the denominator.

In multiplying radicals, these are the procedures to be considered:

Simplify the resulting radicand when necessary.

b. When indices are different but radicands are the same. Apply the following
steps:
1. Transform the radical to fractional exponents.
2. Multiply the powers by applying: 𝑥 𝑚 𝑥 𝑛 = 𝑥 𝑚+𝑛 (Law of Exponents)
3. Rewrite the product as a single radical
4. Simplify the resulting radicand if necessary.
c. When indices and radicands are different. Do the following steps:
1. Transform the radicals to powers with fractional exponents.
2. Change the fractional exponents into a similar fractions.
3. Rewrite the product as a single radical.
4. Simplify the resulting radicand if necessary.

Example 1. √24𝑥 • √3𝑥𝑦


Step 1. Check if the indices of the radicals =√24𝑥 •√3𝑥𝑦
are the same. If yes, then directly multiply
= √72𝑥 2 𝑦
the radicands.
Step 2. Factor the product inside with a = √(9𝑥 2 )(8𝑦)
perfect square terms and extract to = 3𝑥√8𝑦
simplify. The answer is 𝟑𝒙√𝟖𝒚.

Example 2. Multiply 4√6 and 5√24.


Step 1. Check if the indices of the radicals = (4)(5)√(6)(24)
are the same. If the radicals have the same = 20√(144)
index, multiply terms the outside the
= (20)(12)
radical with terms outside the radical and
= 240
terms inside the radical with terms inside
the radical.
The answer is 240.
Step 2. Simplify the radicals.

Example 3. Multiply 3√12𝑥 •√8𝑥 3 𝑦


Step 1. Check if the indices of the radicals = 3√(12)(8)(𝑥)(𝑥 3 )
are the same. If the radicals have the same = 3√96𝑥 4
index, multiply terms the outside the
radical with terms outside the radical and = 3√(16)(6)𝑥 4
terms inside the radical with terms inside = (3)(4)(𝑥 2 )√6

Step 2. Factor and simplify the radicals.

Solution: = 𝑥𝑦√35
The answer is 𝒙𝒚√𝟑𝟓.

= (−5)(−2)(9)√(15)(5)(3)(𝑎)(𝑎𝑏)(𝑎)
Solution: = 90√(5)(3)(5)(3)(𝑎)(𝑎)(𝑏)(𝑎)
= 90 (3)(5)(𝑎)√𝑎𝑏
= 1350𝑎√𝑎𝑏
The answer is 𝟏𝟑𝟓𝟎𝒂√𝒂𝒃.
