Let Us Study
You learned from the previous lesson how Laws of Radicals were derived. In
this lesson you will learn how to apply those laws in simplifying radicals.
𝑛
From the previous lesson, Radical is an expression of the form √𝑎 denoting
the principal nth root of a. The positive integer n is the index, or order, of the radical
and the number a is the radicand. The index is omitted if n = 2.
The laws for radicals are obtained directly from the laws for exponents by
𝒎
𝒏
means of the definition √𝒂𝒎 = 𝒂 𝒏 .
LAWS OF RADICALS

In this lesson, it will test you on how you can apply the previous concepts in
the operations of radicals, how to solve radical equations, how to solve real life
problems involving radicals. You will first perform operations of radical expressions.
Now, let us recall some of the skills that you have learned about radical
expression that will help you perform the operations on radical expressions.

Now that you have already understood what you need to learn in the previous
lesson, let us apply this knowledge in performing operations on radical expressions.
It is very important to know what is similar radicals and dissimilar radicals.
Radical expression with the same order and the same radicand is called similar
radicals while radicals with different indices and different radicands are called
dissimilar radicals. From the given definition try to answer the given activity.
Direction: Let us identify whether the given set of radicals are similar radicals or
dissimilar radicals. Write SR if it is Similar Radicals and DR if it is Dissimilar
Radicals.

Adding and Subtracting Radical Expressions
Note: To add or subtract radical expressions, see to it that given radical expressions
are similar radical expressions. You can only add or subtract similar radicals (radicals
with the same index and radicand). To add or subtract, add or subtract the coefficients
first then affix the common radical. And, to add or subtract dissimilar radicals you
need to simplify first the expression before adding or subtracting. Answer must be in
its simplest form.
Step 2: To add or subtract radicals, the indices and what is inside the radical (called
the radicand) must be exactly the same. If the indices and radicands are the
same, then add or subtract the terms in front of each like radical. If the indices
or radicands are not the same, then you cannot add or subtract the radicals.

Example 3. Simplify: 2𝑥 √24𝑥 + 5√81𝑥 4

2𝑥 √24𝑥 + 5 √81𝑥 4

Step 1: Simplify each radical. 3 3

Step 2: Add or subtract the radicals. 3

To multiply radical expression, you must apply the different laws of radical
and the different properties of multiplication like distributive property and special
products of polynomials. Rationalizing the denominator in this lesson is necessary
to simplify radical expression. Make sure that the denominator is not in radical form.

The factors in the expression are also called conjugate pairs. Let us
find out what conjugate pairs are and when it is used. Since you were now
able to rationalize and simplify radicals, let us proceed to division of radical
expression.
Radicals with same order can be divided. However, if the radicals do not
have the same order certain processes must be followed to make their orders
the same. The following procedures may be used to divide radicals.

• Like radicals or similar radicals are radicals of the same order(index) and
having the same radicand.
• Only like/similar radicals can be added or subtracted.
• Add/subtract the coefficients then copy the common radical.
• In multiplying radicals, apply the different laws of radical and the different
properties of multiplication like distributive property and special products
of polynomials.
• Rationalizing the denominator is necessary to simplify radical expression.
Make sure that the denominator is not in radical form.

• To divide radical of different orders, it is necessary to express them as
radical with the same order.
• C. To divide radicals with a denominator consisting of at least two terms,
rationalize the denominator using its conjugate.
