Laboratory Activity 2.1
Laboratory Activity 2.1
Visible light is the fourth EM radiation in the spectrum. It has higher energy than infrared but lower energy
than ultraviolet. It is the only EM radiation visible to the human eye.
From your lower grade science, you have already learned that light can be scattered into the color of the
rainbow (ROY G BIV). This is known as the visible light spectrum. Like other EM radiations, the sub-spectrum
of visible light also varies in wavelength, frequency, and energy.
OBJECTIVE:
1. Compare the varying frequency and energy of the different colors of the visible light spectrum
INSTRUCTION:
2. Measure the energy and frequency of each color of the visible light spectrum by adjusting the
wavelength. You can do this by using the visible spectrum slider (Figure 2.1). The measure of the
wavelength is recorded on the left side of the slider. Adjust this according to the given value in Table
2.1.
3. Take note of all readings for the frequency and energy as indicated on Wave View and Photon View
Monitors respectively. Record all the data in the table below.

GUIDE QUESTIONS:
1. Which of the color spectrum has the highest frequency? the lowest frequency? (2 points)
Highest is violet
Lowest is red
2. Which of the color spectrum has the greatest energy? the least energy? (2 points)
Greatest energy is red and violet
Least energy is orange
3. Which of the color spectrum has the shortest wavelength? the longest wavelength? (2 points)
Shortest is violet
Longest is red
4. How are you going the describe the relationship between frequency and wavelength? Explain. (3
points)
Frequency and wavelength have both direct and inverse relationships. The wave with shorter
wavelength will have a higher frequency while a longer wavelength will have a lower frequency.
5. How are you going the describe the relationship between energy and wavelength? Explain your
answer. (3 points)
The higher the photon's frequency, the higher its energy. Equivalently, the longer the photon's
wavelength, the lower its energy.
6. How are you going the describe the relationship between frequency and energy? Support your
answer. (3 points)
The amount of energy they carry is related to their frequency and their amplitude. The higher the
frequency, the more energy, and the higher the amplitude, the more energy.
