The document provides an overview of a 10th grade science module about the electromagnetic spectrum. It includes expectations that students will learn about the different regions of the spectrum and how they differ in wavelength, frequency, and energy. There is a pre-test with multiple choice questions about the electromagnetic spectrum. The module then describes the electromagnetic spectrum and its ordering from radio waves to gamma rays. It discusses the characteristics of electromagnetic waves, including that they all travel at the speed of light. Charts are provided about the visible light spectrum and wavelengths of different colors. Activities have students practice sequencing the spectrum and comparing properties of different waves. A post-test concludes the module summary.

BRIEF INTRODUCTION
The electromagnetic spectrum is a continuum of electromagnetic
waves arranged according to frequency and wavelength. It shows the
gradual progression from the waves of lowest frequencies to the waves
of highest frequencies. In the electromagnetic spectrum,
electromagnetic (EM) waves are arranged from longest to shortest
wavelengths (or correspondingly, from lowest to highest frequencies) in
this order: Radio waves - Microwaves – Infrared waves – Visible Light -
Ultraviolet – X-rays – Gamma rays.
All EM waves have the same speed, the speed of light. The
amount of energy carried by EM waves is directly proportional to its
frequency and inversely proportional to its wavelength.
The Figure below will give you a clearer idea of the characteristics
of the electromagnetic wave.

Fig. 1. The Electromagnetic Spectrum

The visible light shares the thinnest slice or region in the

electromagnetic spectrum. It lies between the infrared and the ultraviolet
rays. It is the only EM waves perceived by the human eye.

Figure 2. The Visible Spectrum

Though these colors travel at the same speed, they come in
different wavelengths. From red to violet, the colors come in decreasing
wavelengths. That is, red has the longest wavelength and violet has the
shortest.
