CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Situational Analysis

Garbage is always a problem in our society. People have been trying to compensate

different techniques to promote garbage segregation all over the world. Maintaining the

cleanliness of our environment is important for the health of humans, but keeping our

environment clean is not easy. Due to uncontrollable waste that is being collected every

day, many waste litters in open lands having various types of diseases and viruses evolve.

This will be a major problem in our society and lead to danger for health of humans,

plants and animals. One possible solution for this problem is segregation, proper

segregation makes it possible to reuse and reduce trashes/garbage to lessen waste

pollution.

Today, we often use manual segregation by putting up several bins for different types

of garbage such as: metals, plastic, papers, wet, and dry, etc. But this method has a lot of

inconsistency; one is people being unaware towards waste segregation. Due to the lack of

knowledge in proper segregation, untreated wastes are being piled up in our landfills. The

researcher’s idea is to make an Improvised Automated Waste-Bin Segregator using

Arduino that can identify different kind of wastes and put them into different bins
accordingly. Implementing our project into Rural and Urban places, households and

school areas may reduce waste pollution and promote waste segregation.

Garbage is one of the main problems in our society. Smart ways of collecting

trashes/garbage in remote areas is one of the main goal of this research. According to

Amrutha Chandramohan et. al. there is no such system that can segregate wastes into

three categories which such as dry, wet, and metallic in household levels. Using

Improvised Automated Waste-Bin Segregator using Arduino, segregation in household

levels can be accomplished. The automated garbage segregator has inductive sensors to

identify metallic items and can determine the wet and dry. Using this we can eliminate

the challenge of having a clean and green environment.

The automated garbage segragator has a limit which is, it can only segregate one

garbage at a time. Aleena V.J, et. al. states that Ultrasonic sensors being used will help

sense garbage that will end the information to microcontroller. Likewise Bajaj J. S. et. al

says that upgrades can be done to an existing projects which indicates that after building

an automated garbage segregator it can be faster and better through time. Automated

garbage segregator can help reduce man power to segregate trash and automatically

despose trash in their right places.

A study of Kittali R. M, et. al. discussed that PLC can be used in making an

automated garbage segregator. PLC gives an advantage of improved accuracy and speed

in waste segregation that can help reduce manpower. This will help people avoid working

in hazardous places preventing future problems due to the environment. Khurel V. also

stated in its recent study that placing camera at each garbage collection point can help
give high accurate percentage in segregation, but using this would not be economically

reliable because most of the cameras has a high value.

The researchers would make a model that is cost efficient for them to make an

automated garbage segregator that would be used in households to lessen garbage

pollution. The researchers would be using IR Sensors to help segregate the garbage.

Reasons why the research was taken

The researchers would like to take this study to lessen waste pollution and promote

waste segregation. This helps people control garbage and give them a more quality life.

Not only for humans but the researchers aim to also help animal’s health and the

environment. Automated garbage segregator would give a new way to maintain

cleanliness in a more efficient way.

Conceptual Framework

Waste segregation is included in law because it is much easier to recycle.

Effective segregation of wastes means that less wastes goes to landfill which makes it

cheaper and better for people and the environment. It is also important to segregate for

public health. Segregation is one of the most important activities that we need to promote

and enforce for effective waste management. Therefore, the researchers decide to make

an Improvised Automated Waste-Bin Segregator using Arduino to make it more efficient

and durable to promote segregation.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

General Objectives

The main objective of this study is to determine if the Improvised Automated waste-

bin segregator using Arduino can segregate waste properly.

Specific Objectives

1. To determine if the improvised automated waste-bin segregator using Arduino can

properly analyze and monitor the garbage/wastes.

2. Building an Improvised Automated Waste-Bin Segregator using Arduino to lessen

the scattered garbage/wastes of the community.

3. Segregating the wastes properly to make the environment clean and healthy.

Significance of the Study

The result of this study is useful for the society and people, especially during different

events in the society. This study can be an alternative in segregating waste to lessen the

scattered garbage/trashes of the society. The people living in rural places with no

knowledge in segregation of wastes, will be the main beneficiary of this study. This will

serve as their potential waste segregator.

Many manufacturing companies may venture to these exertions especially to those

who are in the field of mechanical production.

Improvised automated waste bin segregator is powered by the use of Arduino and

batteries that no harm to the environment.

Scope and Delimitation

This study entitled “Improvised Automated Waste-Bin Segregator Using Arduino

was conducted at Naguilian National High School located at Imelda, Naguilian, La Union

during this year 2020-2021

This study is limited concept of the researchers as to the idea and to the use of
