Introduction To Computers Outline
Aims:
The purpose of this course unit is to introduce learners to technologies that model successful
business practices ad systems into knowledge-based enterprises.
Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this course unit the learner should be able to:
1. Recognize the role and functions of computer hardware and software
2. Explain how information systems technology is used in business
3. Identify new technologies that are transforming business, and will increasingly do so in
the near future
4. Recognize emerging issues and trends in information communication technology
5. Demonstrate knowledge and application of Internet in all situations
Content:
Introduction to basic computing concepts; computer operations and applications; digital
computers; computer hardware and software; end-user computing; spreadsheet; flowcharts; data
structures; computer programming; business packages and Internet basics.

Week 11 E-Commerce Understand how e-commerce has changed today’s business practices,
Discuss the positive impact of e-commerce on global society;
Differentiate between the various e-commerce business models:
business-to-consumer, consumer-to-consumer, business-to-business, and
business-to-employee; Identify various e-commerce revenue streams
Week 12 Ethics Understand that computers have made a tremendous difference in daily
living; Describe how computers change the way society interacts with
disciplines such as education, entertainment, finance, government,
health care, science, publishing, and travel; Recognize the issues
associated with the digital divide, Understand how e-commerce affects
the way people conduct business; Identify ways virtual reality,
intelligent agents, and robots are being used in daily life; Learn how to
prevent health related disorders and injuries due to computer use,
Understand how to design a workspace ergonomically, Recognize
symptoms of computer addiction, Explain green computing, Understand
ethical issues surrounding computer use
Week 13 Security Identify the various types of security risks that can threaten computers,
Recognize how a computer virus works and take the necessary steps to
prevent viruses, Describe ways to safeguard a computer, Recognize that

Determine why computer backup is important and how it is
accomplished, Understand ways to secure an Internet transaction, List
ways to protect your personal information
