Objectives:
 to induce the attention of safety precautions in Basic physics Laboratory.
 to be told the usage of kit in Basic physics Laboratories like Digital
Multi-meter (DMM), DC Power Supply, and Breadboard.
 to live the resistance, voltage, and current victimization DMM

Equipment Required:
 Breadboard
 Digital Multi-meter (DMM)
 DC Power Supply: +12V and +5V (fixed)
 Resistors: 4.7-kΩ [Qty=1]; 6.8-kΩ [Qty=1];
 Connecting wires
Theory:
1. Digital Multi-meter (DMM):
A digital multimeter (DMM) is an associate electronic measuring system that mixes
many mensuration functions in one unit. DMM encompasses a numeric show to indicate
the specified parameters. A typical DMM will measure voltage, current, and resistance.
it's a regular diagnostic tool for technicians within the electrical/electronic industries and
laboratories. A UT55 DMM that's obtainable in Ba basic physical science laboratory is
shown in Figure 1.1. Basic parameters that most of the DMMs are capable of measuring
include:
 Resistance
 DC Voltage and Current
 AC Voltage and Current

Figure 1.1

 The UT55 DMM conjointly provides special operates, love semiconductor unit
or diode tests, mensuration of frequency, capacitance, and inductance.
1.1 Resistance Measurement:
Set the DMM to the Ω function to live resistance as shown in Figure 1.2. Before you
connect the ohmmeter, you want to disconnect the resistance to be measured from the
circuit. Before you disconnect any component, 1st flip the facility offer off. Whenever the
resistance is in your hand, don't bite each of the leads of the resistance together with your
hand. you'll be able to grip the one finish (leg) of resistalongsideide one lead of DMM in
your hand and bit the opposite lead of DMM to the resistor to be measured, while not
touching your body to the other lead. Use applicable of vary of ohmmeter, to live the
resistance additional accurately.

1.2 DC Voltage Measurement:

Rotate the knob to V- function. Verify that the oxide plugs into the V jack and also the
black lead plugs into the COM jack as shown in Figure 1.3. to create a measurement,
connect the tip of the oxide and also the tip of the atomic number 6 across the purposes
wherever you would like to live the voltage (potential difference). A positive meter
reading implies that the point where the red tip is connected is going to be at a higher
potential than the point where the black tip is connected.

1.3 DC Current Measurement:
Rotate the knob to A- operate as shown in Figure 1.4. Verify that the oxide plugs into the
A (or mA) jack and also the atomic number 6 plugs into the COM jack. to create a current
measurement, the tip of the red lead and the tip of the black lead should be inserted serial
with the part whose current is to be measured. A positive meter reading implies that the
purpose wherever the red tip is connected has current coming into it.

Figure 1.4
Similarly, AC voltages and currents will be measured mistreatment V~/A~ functions of
DMM respectively.
2. DC Power Supply:
 The DC power offer has each variable and glued DC voltage supply. just in case
of variable supply, the voltage will be set to the desired level by rotating the voltage
management knob between 0V to 24V. fastened DC voltage sources of +5V, +12V, -5V,
and 12V are obtainable on the facility supply.

3. Breadboard:
The board is employed to construct temporary electronic circuits for testing purposes.
The elements and wiring are inserted within the holes available on the breadboard. The
outer and inner structure of the breadboard is shown in Figure 1.5(a) and 1.5(b)
respectively. Since no fastening is involved, the elements and also the wiring will be
simply removed and reconnected.

Safety Precautions:
i. Handle the live circuits with extreme care. don't work with wet hands
within the laboratory.
ii. continually raise questions or obtain a recommendation from lab staff, if
you're unsure of what to try and do in any explicit situation
iii. Any fault in the instrumentation should be forthwith rumored and will not
be used till it's inspected and declared safe by lab staff.
iv. don't undo the facility cable whereas most AC power is switched ON. take
away the supply of power before disassembling a circuit.
v. continually set the knob of DMM to outlined position (various AC/DC
selections) before taking associated measurements.

vi. Instruments particularly cathode-ray oscilloscopes ought to be graduated

before their use in electrical circuits. Further, shut down the instruments
together with DMMs after they aren't in use.
vii. once the oscilloscope is employed to research the circuits that involve high
voltages, there's continually a danger of electrical shock. The person
victimization the oscilloscope in such conditions should be qualified. don't
operate the oscilloscope with the case removed unless you're an seasoned
service technician.
viii. The ever-present hazard in the associate electrical laboratory is that the
electric shock. most people relate the severity of electrical shock with the
magnitude of electric voltage, this can be not true. the important life of a
shock is the quantity of current that flows through the body.
ix. to reduce the possibilities of electrical hazards, don't wear rings, watches,
and other loose aluminous objects. Rings and watches are particularly
dangerous because the skin at a lower place is wet by sweat, creating the
resistance of skin abundant lower. continually wear dry shoes throughout
the experimentation, that can give full coverage of the feet.
x. never move instruments once the facility cable or signal probe is connected
to a circuit. continually use protected power cables and signal probes. ne'er
build any changes to a circuit while not removing the connections to power
supplies.
xi. All students ought to be acquainted with the situation and operation of
safety instrumentation love the emergency power OFF button. Localize the
emergency power OFF button in your laboratory at the start of the semester.
xii. continually follow the directions given by your lab educator on how to
use the electronic tools and instruments. One tool that needs special
attention is that the hand tool. ne'er place a hot fastening iron on or close to
the instrument. Careless use may end up in painful burns and hearth.
continually place the recent iron in its holder. flip the soldering iron ON
only you wish to use it and switch it OFF after you have done your job
(even if you will need it in five minutes). The short tune-up time could be of
little value to get the interference of potential fire and burn hazards.
 Procedure: (How to find resistance, voltages and currents using DMM)
a. Pick up two different resistors and measure their resistances using DMM.
Record these resistances in Table 1.1.
