5.1 Graphs of Reciprocal Functions

The document discusses the graphs of reciprocal functions and their properties compared to the original function. It notes that the y-coordinates are reciprocals of each other, zeros of one function are vertical asymptotes of the other, and increasing/decreasing intervals are switched. The graphs intersect when the original function is 1 or -1. It provides examples of completing tables of values and sketching the graph of a function and its reciprocal for various functions.

5.1  Graphs of Reciprocal Functions

rational function
a function that can be written in the form
where f(x) and g(x) are polynomials

reciprocal function
a rational function with the numerator = 1

  e.g.  original function: y = x y = x2   y = x2    y=x2  4

      reciprocal function:

Consider the graphs of y = x and its reciprocal, y = 1/x:

x  y=x  y=1/x  Property  y=x  y=1/x

Comparing the graphs of y=f(x) and y = 1/f(x)

ycoordinates are reciprocals of each other
zeros of one function are vertical asymptotes for the other f'n

   graphs intersect when y = 1, y = 1
 (reciprocal: 1/1 = 1, 1/(1) = 1)

increasing and decreasing intervals are switched
(when one f'n increases, reciprocal decreases)

intervals where f(x) > 0 are the same for a f'n and its reciprocal
intervals where f(x) < 0 are the same for a f'n and its reciprocal
    ( 1/(postive #) = positive #,   1/(negative #) = negative # )

local minimum on original >>> local maximum on reciprocal
local maximum on original >>> local minimum on reciprocal
