Create A Simple Circuit in EMTP Step-1: Adding Components - : L R SW1 AC1

1) The document describes the steps to create a simple RLC circuit in EMTP and simulate it. This includes adding components like a resistor, inductor, capacitor, voltage source and switch, connecting them, modifying parameters, adding measurement meters, running the simulation, viewing outputs and exporting results. 2) Key steps are adding library components to the GUI, connecting them as shown, modifying component parameters, adding voltage and current meters, running the simulation, viewing output waveforms and exporting results. 3) The document provides details on how to compare simulation results by saving snapshots of waveforms and re-running simulations with different component values.

Create a simple circuit in EMTP

Step-1: Adding components

- Add the components of resistance, inductance and capacitance
from the library of ‘RLC branches’ into GUI by drag and drop the
component into GUI as shown in Figure.
- Source: Drag & drop “AC voltage source (3-phase)” from ‘Source’
library.
- Switch: Drag & drop “Ideal Switch” from Switches library.
- Ground: Drag and drop the Ground from Source or RLC branches.
Step-2: Create a Connection:
Click on component pin and move a cursor to next component.
Connect all the components as shown in SLD below.

Step-3: Modify Parameter:

- Double-click on the components and it will open Device Data window. The actual
system parameters are entered in the window and click “Ok”
- Source: Voltage 11 kV RMS LL, F=50 Hz

- Switch: Switch is closing at 30ms and will not open during simulation.
• Tclose = 30ms
• Topen = 1E15 or click on “Never open”.

- L=10 mH
- C=2 uF
Step-4: Modify components Name
Change the name of the components by right-click on the component → Click on the
name → Change the name and enable the visible → Click ok.

Step-5: Adding measured parameters

- Connect the “Voltage scope (1-pin)” from “Meters library” to measure phase voltage
at capacitor. It measures node voltage.
- Alternatively, Double click on the capacitor→Go to Scope Tab→enable voltage (v). It is
measure of branch voltage i.e. voltage across capacitor.
- Double click on the switch → Go to the scope tab → Enable the current. → Click ok. It
measures current flow through the switch.

Step-6: Run the simulation.
- Goto Simulate tab → Simulation options → Enter the main time-step as 10 us and
Simulation time: tmax as 100 ms → Default frequency to 50 Hz → click ok.

- Run the simulation.

Step-7: View the output responses.

- To see the output responses, Goto simulate tab → Click on the “View scopes with
scopeview”. Two main windows are appeared,
o The Signal Selection Window is used to select and configure signals.
o The Signal Graph Window displays the signals selected in the Signal Selection
Window.
- In signal selection window,
o Enable the multiple in signal selection mode and superimposed in graph
creation mode.
o Select the signal type as branch voltage and select the signals of
“capacitora@vb, capacitorb@vb & capacitorc@vb” → click on the add selected
→ Click on run.

How to export simulation responses?

- There are two options
o Using Scopeview. After plotting responses, Go to File→ Export. Please select
path, Type of format (*.txt, *.png,, Comtrade, *.mat, etc…)
o Using EMTPWorks. Drag & drop “Sample in File” to GUI from EMTP works→
Meters library.
In the signal graph window, Click on the export → Save the file in .png format → click
on the export.

How to compare the responses easily?

Scopeview “Snapshot” option save the simulation responses temporarily. Using this
feature, the any changes made in design file.
Eaxmple: Compare switch current for the capacitance of 2uF and 5 uF.
- Delete voltage and undo superimpose switch current:
In the signal graph window → Delete the voltage waveform by select and delete
- Select the switch current waveform → click on the undo super imposition → Select
current waveform of all phases → click on the snapshot.

Undo Super imposition Snapshot

- Goto EMTPWorks → Change the capacitance value from 2uf to 5uF → Run simulation
- Goto Signal graph window → Click on run.
