CHAPTER 1. INTRODUCTION
Wind can be defined as the movement of air from one place to another that
can create force strong enough to move objects. With this kind of force, wind
turbines were invented that can convert the wind’s kinetic force into electrical
energy that can be used to power up appliances and even light up houses.
On the other hand, smartphones are technological devices that can function
similar to a computer making it one of the must have objects in today’s
generation. O’dea (2021) stated that almost half of the population in the world are
considered smartphone users. According to his study, three billion people around
the world have smartphones and is expected to grow by several hundred million in
the next few years.
Many smartphone users mean that a lot of electricity are being consumed
because of these devices. According to Helman (2013), 2 kilowatt-hours of
electricity is being wasted in charging smartphones a year. With the increasing
number of people getting smartphones annually, the estimated amount of money
being spent because of charging phones in the world is around 1.5 Billion U.S.
dollars per year.
Because of the pandemic going around the world, people use their phones
more often than before. Therefore, the amount of time people charges their phones
probably doubled or even more. Due to these circumstances, the researchers
decided to create a charger that can charge phones using renewable energies like
the wind energy.
This study aims to create a phone charger that is powered by wind energy and
is small enough to fit in backpacks when traveling. The researchers also plan to
make the charger using materials that can be found in their home. This study will
be conducted in Barangay San Isidro, Cabangan, Zambales and will be done on
the month of May until July,2021.
Students
Because of online classes, modular learning, and to get away from
boredom, students or teenagers use their phones more during the
pandemic. With this study, students living in areas with winds can use this
kind of charger to charge their phones for free.
Travelers
Even though there is still a pandemic caused by COVID-19, there are
still people that travels a lot such as going to the beach or hiking to places
they have never reached before. With this charger, they can charge their
phones with just the power of the wind. Unlike powerbanks that only has a
limited energy.
Future Researchers
This study can help future researchers as well. It can give them ideas
that will help them create more things that is powered by wind energy.
This study can also be a background for their study
Conceptual Framework
In this study, harnessing or using wind energy will be the independent variable
while the smartphone charger will be the dependent variable. The expected output
of this study is that the charger should be portable, it can save electricity, and most
importantly it can charge smartphones.
This study was conducted to create a charger strong enough to charge phones
by harnessing or using wind energy.
Definition of Terms
Wind – it is the air that is moving from one place to another making force that
people can feel.
CHAPTER 2. METHODOLOGY
Research Method
Research Locale
Materials:
Dynamo/HC Motor – 2 pcs (depends on how many volts the dynamo can
handle)
Plastic Container – 1 pc
Plastic Bottle Cap – 2 pcs (must be the same with the number of dynamos)
Copper Wires – at least 0.5 meter long
USB port – 1 pc
Bamboo – 0.5 inch in diameter
Procedures:
1. Cut three pieces (three for each dynamo) of triangle shaped plastic from the
plastic container with the length of 4 inches and with the base of 1 inch.
2. Twist the cut-out plastic until they are twisted permanently.
3. Grab your bottle cap and place the twisted plastic into the bottle cap using
shoe glue.
4. Grab the dynamo and stick it into the top of the bamboo.
5. Using a soldering iron, connect the copper wires into the dynamo.
6. Next is connect the other end of the copper wires into the USB port.
7. Grab your bottle cap with the fans on it and put a hole in the middle small
enough to fit the tip of the dynamo.
8. Using a shoe glue, stick the dynamo to the hole you created and seal it nicely.
9. Try putting it into the front of an electric fan to test wether it spins or not.
10. Try charging your phone as well to test if the mini wind turbine you created is
working or not.
