SAIC-W-2015 Select Welds For NDE (On-Plot)

This document is a Saudi Aramco inspection checklist for selecting welds joints for non-destructive examination on on-plot piping. It outlines criteria for selecting butt welds and other pressure containing welds for testing using methods like radiography, liquid penetrant testing, and magnetic particle testing. Butt welds must be selected according to standards like SAEP-324 and SAES-W-011, including the initial weld of each welder and 10% of weekly welds. 100% testing is required for certain high-risk welds. Record keeping of weld joints and testing results is important. Adherence to best practices aims to prevent issues and ensure consistent monitoring of weld quality.

A Pressure Containing Butt Welds for Radiography

SAEP-324,
A1 The initial butt weld of each welder is selected for radiographic testing.
Para. 6.2.6

For welds in the 10% radiographic coverage, selection of welds is based

on the weekly weld production.
SAES-W-011,
A2 (NOTE: This shall be agreed upon by SAPMT, Contractor & PID.
Para. 17.6
This requirement may also be referred to SAES-W-011,
Para. 17.5.2, Issue March 30, 2005)
Weld joints selected due to progressive examination (penalty shots) of a
SAES-W-011,
A3 defective weld are not counted in the 10% selection of welds for
Para. 17.1.9
radiography.

For on-shore piping, at least 10% of the each week's production weld
(circumferential girth welds), or as dictated by Item A2 above, are
radiographed for the following:
a. Carbon steel and low alloy steel for general and hydrocarbon
service. (SAES-W-011, Para. 17.6.1.1 )
b. Firewater systems (NOTE: interpreted to "normal fluid service").
(SAES-W-011, Para. 17.6.1.2 ) SAES-W-011,
A4
c. Shop fabricated pipe materials for low temperature service Para. 17.6.1
below -18°C. (SAES-W-011, Para.17.6.1.3.1)
d. Shop fabricated alloy steel (EXCEPT P4, P5 & P6), stainless steel,
and nonferrous materials for all services except Category D
fluids. (SAES-W-011, Para. 17.6.1.4. 1)
(NOTE: Shop is an indoor facility approved by
Saudi Aramco Inspection per SAES-W-011, Para.17.6.1.3.1 )

For on-shore piping, 100% RT is performed on the following:

a. Field welds of piping in low temperature service
below -18°C. (SAES-W-011, Para.17.6.1.3.2 )
b. Shop fabricated alloy steel, P-No. 4, 5, and 6 materials.
(SAES-W-011, Para.17.6.1.4.1 )
c. For field and yard welds of all alloy steel materials (P4
and above), stainless steel, and nonferrous materials for all SAES-W-011,
A5
services except Cat D fluids. (SAES-W-011, Para.17.6.1.4.1) Para. 17.6.1
d. Hydrocarbon service at road crossings (carrier pipe
only). (SAES-W-011, Para.17.6.1.6)
e. Piping with severe cyclic conditions (as defined in B31.3).
(SAES-W-011, Para.17.6.1.7)
f. Category M fluid service (as defined in B31.3).
(SAES-W-011, Para.17.6.1.8)

For off-shore piping top side piping in Category D fluid service above
0°C (includes all lines over water, over tidal flats, or within 30 m of the
shoreline), 10% of the weekly production welds are random selected for
radiography. These are:
a. Firewater systems SAES-W-011,
A6
b. Raw water system Para. 17.6.2.2
c. Pressure sewer system
d. All open non-pressure vents and drains
(NOTES: a. Stainless steel in chlorinated sea water is excluded.
b. Results are interpreted to "normal fluid service".)

For off-shore top side piping (includes all lines over water, over tidal flats,
or within 30 m of the shoreline), 100% of the welds of piping systems
SAES-W-011,
A7 listed below are selected for radiography:
Para. 17.6.2.2
a. All services other than Category D fluids
b. Stainless steel in chlorinated sea water service.

Selection of welds for the 10% RT are distributed to include welds

A8 Best Practice
completed by each welder. {ASME B31.3, Para. 341.4.1 (b) (1)}

Weld joints completed by the welder each day are recorded on the Daily
A9 Best Practice
Weld Production Report, SATR-W-2007.
Where multiple welders are used to weld a particular joint, daily weld
A10 record shall indicate the weld area covered by each welder, ie: Root Best Practice
weld, hot pass, capping etc.

Weld joints selected for radiography or other applicable NDE are

A11 Best Practice
recorded in the Daily Weld Production Report, SATR-W-2007.

Radiographic testing of welds are performed not more than 1 week from
the reported date of completion of the weld.
A12 (NOTE: This requirement is meant to prevent the occurrence of RT back Best Practice
log which could affect the trend analysis of weld rejection rate and the
early detection of non-conforming welders and weld joints. )

B Pressure Containing Welds Other than Butt Welds

Pressure containing welds of branch connections, such as weldolets,

sockolets, welding bosses and stub-on branch connections are selected SAES-W-011,
B1
for LPT (Non-ferromagnetic materials) or MPT (ferromagnetic materials) Para. 17.6
with the same frequency as listed in Section A of this checklist.

All attachment welds on pressurized components that are not

hydrotested after making the attachment weld are selected for 100%
B2 Best Practice
NDE (LPT or MPT).
(NOTE: This is a requirement in SAES-W-011, Para. 7.5.3.1)

REMARKS:

NOTES:
1. Items indicated as "Best Practice" shall be agreed upon by Contractor, SAPMT and Inspection. These will then be
incorporated in the project requirement and in the Project Quality Plan and will be mandatory for implementation.
