OVERVIEW…
In performing fundamental operations on real numbers, a set of mathematical laws called Properties
of Real Numbers is needed. These properties are statements that are true to all the real numbers.
Learning Standards and Outcome

 Content Standards: The learner demonstrates understanding of the sets and the real number
system.
 Performance Standards: The learner is able to formulate challenging situations involving sets
and real numbers and solve these in a variety of strategies.
 Learning Targets: After accomplishing all the learning activities in the module, I can;
1. Illustrates the different properties of operations on the set of real numbers
2. Expresses rational numbers from fraction form to decimal form and vice versa
3. Identify the property illustrated in each sentence
4. Complete each statement using the given property

Closure Property of Addition


If x and y are real numbers, then the sum
z =x + y
is also a real number

Closure Property of Multiplication


If x and y are real numbers, then the product
z =xy
is also a real number

Closure properties give the assurance that the sum or product of any two real numbers is
also a real number.
It is interesting to know if real numbers are also closed under subtraction and division.

Commutative Property of Addition


If x and y are real numbers, then

Closure properties state that the order of the addends or factors does not change the sum
or product, respectively.
The learner is encouraged to investigate whether x - y = y – x and x ÷ y = y ÷ x, if x and
y are real numbers.

Associative Property of Addition


If x, y and z are real numbers, then
a. (3 + 1) + 2 = 3 + (1 + 2)

Associative Property of Multiplication


If x, y and z are real numbers, then

The associative properties state that the grouping of addends or factors does not change
the sum or product, respectively.

Distributive Property of Multiplication over Addition


If x, y and z are real numbers, then

a. 6 (7 + 9) = 6(7) + 6(9)
= 42 + 54
= 96
b. (-8)(11) – (-8)(8) = (-8)(11-8)
= (-8)(3)
= -24
Multiplication is said to be distributive over addition and subtraction.

Identity Property of Addition


If x is real number, then

Identity Property of Multiplication
If x is real number, then
a. (0.25)(1) = 0.25
b. (1)(√ 3 ) = √ 3
Zero (0) is the additive identity element, and one (1) is multiplicative identity element.
These imply that the sum or product of any real number and 0 or 1, respectively, will result to a
real number.

Inverse Property of Addition


If x is real number, then there exists another real number (-x) such that

a. 45 + (-45) = 0
b. (-0.125) + 0.125 = 0

If the sum of two real numbers are said to be additive inverse or opposites

Inverse Property of Multiplication


If x is real number, and x ≠ 0, then there exists another real number () such that x ⦁

If the product of two nonzero real numbers is 1, the real numbers are said to be multiplicative
inverses or reciprocals.

Zero Property of Multiplication


If x is real number, then

Fraction to Decimal form and Vice Versa


 A fraction whose denominator is 10 or any power of 10 is referred to as decimal form or simply
decimal. Decimals are often written in place-value form as extension of the decimal system which

is based on the number 10. For instance, the decimal fraction is written as 0.1, Is written

 Any common fraction can be converted to decimal by using long division of the numerator by the
denominator

The given example suggests two kinds of decimals namely;


a. Terminating
b. Repeating and nonterminating
The bar on top of the digit indicates that the digit is repeated endlessly: the ellipsis (…) indicates
nonterminating.
