APPLICATION AND ANALYSIS OF ELECTRICALLY HEATED CATALYTIC CONVERTER ON A


FOUR-STROKE SINGLE CYLINDER MOTORCYCLE
Abstract
The Exhaust gas coming out from an automobile emit substantial quantities of hydrocarbons (HO),
Carbon monoxide (CO) and particulate matter. These pollutants have very bad adverse health effects and dete-
riorate environmental quality. The problem in these vehicles are being controlled by action taken by the gov-
ernment, by adding a catalytic converter to all vehicles this problem is being addressed. The catalytic convert-
er does a great job of reducing the harmful gases but it also has a problem of not working at cold start condi-
tion. To improve its ability to reduce the harmful gases it can heated while the vehicle is started at cold condi-
tion. The simple way to preheat is to add an electric heating element to it. Therefore, in this research the ex-
haust of a 4-stroke 1-cylinder motorcycle is attached with 3 glow plugs and tested for pollutants level. The
electrically heated catalytic converter was fixed on the motorcycle and pollution tested and the results were
positive.
Fabrication and Testing

Result and Discussion
Table 1: Chemical change converter’s temperature
Table 1 shows the time and temperature severally, the time taken
in seconds for the convertor to succeed in the required tempera-
ture with the glow plug
Table 2, contains a distinction within the price obtained that is
positive. the quantity of CO, HC, CO2, NOx, created by the en-
gine with stock exhaust and with convertor with glow plug.
Conclusion: Catalytic converter with heating configuration
gives better reduction of NO and CO emission during cold start
x,

compared to the catalyst with no heat configuration. The Carbon


monoxide was reduced by 60% compared to stock exhaust. The

stock exhaust. The nitrogen oxide was reduced to 13 ppm com-
pared to 32 ppm of stock exhaust. All the harmful gases CO,
HC, NOx are reduced but the percentage of carbon dioxide
(CO2) was increased due the chemical reaction during the Oxi-
dation of carbon monoxide to carbon d oxide: 2CO + O2 →
2CO2.
