Automatic Energy Meter
Automatic Energy Meter
ABSTRACT
At present, most of the houses in India have the traditional mechanical watt hour
meters and the billing system is not automated. At the end of each month a person from
the electricity board goes to every house and takes the meter reading manually. These
meter readings are used for electricity bill calculation and this bill sent to consumer’s
house by post. Customer goes to electricity department for paying this bill amount. But in
this technique we are required great number of persons for reading the meters. The
procedures of sending the bills to customer are very laborious and cumbersome. But a new
technology is named Automatic Meter Reading System is discuses. AMR wipes out all the
concepts of conventional systems. Automatic Meter Reading System is a sophisticated
system which allows companies to collect the reading without visiting the site. This paper
will discuss only GSM based AMR system. Automatic meter reading system helps the
customer and energy service provider to access the accurate and updated data from the
energy meter.AMR System can send energy consumption in hourly, monthly or on
request. This data is sent to central system for billing and troubleshooting. These data are
stored into the database server for processing and recording. This technology mitigates
labour cost, collection time, energy theft, avoids late payment. Adding to this it increases
data security, improved customer service, reduced revenue losses.
1.1 EXISTING SYSTEM
Almost every house in India is connected by electricity line, except in some rural
areas. There will be a network of these lines, connec0ting each house. The connection
comes to each house through an energy meter. The energy meter takes the reading of the
number of units consumed. There will be a display of the number of units consumed. An
employee of the electricity department takes the reading in every two months. The number
of units consumed for that period is calculated as:
Current reading on the meter - Previous reading on the meter
They maintain an electricity consumer card at each house, which the employee will
update each time he takes the reading. He writes down the date and current reading. He
writes down the customer number and the reading for his reference too. These readings are
taken to the electricity office, calculations are done and the electricity bill which will be
prepared and send to the customers.
1.2 ADVANTAGES& DISADVANTAGES OF EXISTING SYSTEM
After getting an idea about the existing system we might feel that everything is
going fine. But because of the current system, government is losing lot of its revenue. The
only advantage of the existing system is that it provides employment. A lot of employees
are recruited by the electricity board for the purpose of taking readings. And another set of
employees for doing the calculations and the printing the bill. The government is losing
lots of their fund in paying these employees, where the efficiency of the employees being
far less. A person can’t even cover 100 houses in a day. With 1000 of houses connected by
electricity, the number of employees needed for this purpose is also far high. The existing
system suffers from lots of disadvantages:
Huge amount of man power
Plenty of time to complete the process
Erroneous readings
Missed out houses
Door Locked houses etc…

SYSTEM DESIGN
The system uses Atmega microcontroller which measures the readings from the normal
digital Energy meter implemented by Electricity board. At the end of the month the
system will automatically updates the reading to the KSEB using GSM modem. The
user/officials can see the readings through the web
