1, Sketch a transverse section of the ship showing the
frames, beam, knees, stringers, etc.
12. What gauge would you expect to see if the after cooler is
blocking up (| assume this an air compressor question but
it could be an intercooler).
Utube manometer
13. What checks are made to steering gear before departure?
Why is the steering gear oil is of a low viscosity?
~ Check for any ol leakage
Check the oil level in tank
Check the thermometer and oil temperature in tanks
Check the valves are opened or closed correctly in accordance with
instruction plate
Check the lubrication condition of the sliding parts
Check the pump neutral position: Run‘one unit at a time, 30° port to 35°
starboard in 28 sec’s.
Check the rudder moves correctly by order signal from the wheel house and
the actual angle agrees with the order angle.
Test the communication link between the bridge and the steering gear
compartment.
~ Release air in the hydraulic system.
Thestering gear uses ahigh pressure ate, sof the oli of igh isos,
4
will increase the working presswréigjstom, resulting in overpressure oie system,
which in turn will cause the safely valve to open every time.
14. What does MARPOL stand for? What would you expect to
find in an oil spill box for a vessel over 400 GRT?
Marine Pollution.
Incl sill box youfind:
1) Rubber boots 4) Chemical resistant
2) Hand scrubs rubber gloves
3) Absorbent material 5) Non sparks shovels
6) Sweep

16.What contaminants would expect to find in a boiler feed
water? Where would the contamination originate? How is
detected?
= Oil ~retum coils from fuel, sludge and bilge holding tanks, purifiers, M/E,
DG and boiler FO heaters (repair damage heaters, conduct surface blow
down, collect in the cascade tank and boiler water drum)
(causes: corrosion, act as insulator, overheating)
It can be detected by inspecting the glass on observation tank
= Salt — from the FWG or leaking atmospheric or vacuum condenser, resull
Srom chemical treatment (plug up leeking cooling SW tubes, increase
“Frequency of boiler bottom blow down)
It can be detected by regular boiler water test, visual and audible alarm
given by salinity indicator.
~ Dissolved oxygen — dissolved gasses, very low feed, water (¢ Ghonical
treatment, maintain 90° C cascade tank temp)
(causes: corrosion, scale formation)
17. The intercooler of a main engine has a fin type
construction, how would you tell that the intercooler was
dirty?
Check the pressure in the u-tube manometer. There would be decrease in air
pressure at cooler outlet due to increased resistance.
18. Describe how would you get a ship ready for departure,
assume the vessel is on shore power.
1. Permission from C/E
2. Correct PPE
3. Safety meeting
4, Prepare EG for immediate start:

- Ensure all the indicator cock are open and isolate ME fire alarm
zones.
~ Engage the turn gear device (see that the gear and flywheel are
properly engaged and the indicator lamp “engage” is lit. Run the
turning gear for 30 min (at least one complete tum of crankshaft)
and observe the indicator cock of any fluid flows out during this
procedure.
- When turning as been completed, disengage the turning gear device
and make sure that the gear and flywheel is properly disengaged and
the indicator lamp “disengage” is lit
47. Ensure the main air reservoirs are ready for use
48.Ensure the turning gear is disengaged
4g Start the auxiliary blowers and set it to auto mode
50.Carry out try engine (with C/E approval):
~ Inform the bridge and ask permission to carry out try engine
~ Inform the machine side to check when carrying out air blow
- Cary out air blow with the indicator cocks open
(by putting the engine telegraph handle to start position for about 2-3 seconds
then return back to stop position. Be cautious in doing this procedure as putting
the telegraph handlle into start position for a long time will drainél out air in the
reservoir tank)
- Close the indicator cocks
~ Ensure the auxiliary blowers ave set in automatic mode and the main
engine fuel booster pump is running.
- Carry out try engine on fuel (ahead and astern condition) at ECR
and Bridge
(by putting the revering handle to “Ahead” position if the control is separate from
the telegraph handle and telegraph handle to start position for about.3 seconds or
when the propeller revolution has came to a minimum point for fuel running,
move up the fuel handle tothe specified position (dead slow ahead position) and
fuel running of main engine shall follow. Precautionary measure shell be taken
when the vessel ts still moored that her movement shall not exceed lo more than a
meter so as not to affect the lines holding the ship from the shore. Move back the
telegraph handle to stop position immediately when the revolution of the engine
‘has come to fel running and main engine revolution shall come to stop condition.
‘The personnel at local station shall observe the condition of the main engine while
trying engine and coordinate the observations to the control room. Any
